He has earned it.

Two monsters are dead by his hand. The hall that sat dark and empty for twelve years is full of light and singing again. He is young, undefeated, famous across the northern seas, and he has laid the trophies of his victories at the foot of the throne.

The old king, Hrothgar, looks at the young hero at the absolute peak of his powers. And he gives him the strangest gift in the great poem.

A warning.

The Watchman Falls Asleep

This is known as Hrothgar’s sermon. Eighty-odd lines sitting at the center of Beowulf, and my favorite lines of the poem. Moral. Wise. True.

In my office there is a copy of this poem in a place of honor, the Old English on one page and the translation facing it, and this is the passage that is bookmarked.

Hrothgar describes a man God has favored. Health, land, power, a name. Nothing resists him. The old king says that this is when the danger begins. Because in all that comfort, something inside the man stops paying attention.

...se weard swefeð, sawele hyrde — “the watchman sleeps, the shepherd of the soul.” (line 1741)

While the watchman sleeps, a killer creeps close with a bow.

When you read this poem carefully, you notice the arrow behaves strange. It passes under the helmet and into the heart. The armor is bypassed. The strength and skill at combat are irrelevant for this type of arrow.

The arrow is whispered counsel, and every man reading this has heard it: you built all of this yourself; it is yours, the time, the money, the kingdom. Hold on to it all.

Hrothgar describes what the wound does. The man begins to covet. He grows angry-minded, distrustful. He stops giving. The whispered counsel is like poison.

The poet of Beowulf would have wanted the Anglo-Saxon kings hearing his stories to feel and understand the weight of what he was saying. For an Anglo-Saxon king had a defining virtue, to be a ring-giver (bēaggifa). Wealth existed to move through his hands to his men. A lord who stopped giving rings was already dead. Only, his burial had not yet occurred.

The poet wrote this twelve centuries before anyone coined the phrase cult of self. Yet, he described it with perfection. A man alone at the top of his own life, guarded by success on every side, brought down by a whisper no armor can stop.

Guard your heart, dear poets and warriors.

The Part About Growing Old

Hrothgar stops describing the proud man and looks straight at the young hero in front of him. Dear Beowulf, best of men, guard yourself against that evil. And then the title of this article

Nu is þines mægnes blæd ane hwile — “Now the flower of your strength lasts but a while.” (line 1761)

The old king counts the ways the flower of a warrior’s strength leaves. Sickness or the sword’s edge will strip your strength away. Fire’s grip. Flood’s billowing. The flight of a spear. Or terrible old age, when the brightness of the eyes dims and goes dark.

Hrothgar can say this because he has lived it. He built the greatest hall (heorot/mead-hall) on earth, ruled in glory, and then sat in that hall helpless for twelve years while a monster terrorized and emptied his hall night after night. Strength left him the way it leaves every man: death, he tells Beowulf, will overpower you too.

Hear me now, brothers!

Every one of us is on the same path. Your age will come to an end soon. You may be on the rising tide of success. Perhaps you are strong, competent, and winning. The old king is telling you the flower has a season, and a wise man builds for the day the petals fall while his hands are still full.

The Better Counsels

What does the old king actually tell the strongest man alive to do?

Two words.

...þæt selre geceos, ece rædas — “choose the better part, the eternal counsels.” (lines 1759-1760)

Ece rædas. Eternal counsels. The things that still hold when strength is done.

The Beowulf poet was a Christian, most like a monastic, copying down scripture and ancient stories for us to receive. In doing this, he decided to tell this story. The poet is looking back with love at pagan ancestors who had courage and strength in abundance and no resurrection hope. The poet puts his whole theology into an old king’s mouth: glory is a loan; strength is a loan; the hall, the gold, and the name are loans. The only holdings to survive the funeral pyre are the eternal ones.

Beowulf listened.

He ruled well for fifty years and died, as the old king promised he would.

At the end, his men standing at the burial mound called him the mildest of men, the kindest to his people.

The gold on the pyre melted.

The witness remained.

Find Hrothgar and Beowulf

One more thing before you go.

The most important speech in the poem came from an old man to a young one, from a king who had been humbled to a warrior who had not.

This warning has to be handed down, face to face, by someone who earned the right to give it.

Two questions:

Who is your Hrothgar? Name the older man who has standing to warn you, and put yourself in front of him before the year is out.

And who is your Beowulf? Somewhere a younger man is watching you win. The day is coming when the best thing you can give him is your warning.

Beowulf’s story continues beyond the bright hall.

An older enemy waits at the end, patient, coiled around everything a nation treasures.

If you’d like to hear an artistic interpretation, a rendition, of Hrothgar’s Sermon in Old English give this a listen:

It stands in a churchyard. Just around 24 feat of gritstone, 15 feet around, roughly forty tons, hauled from an outcrop about ten miles away by men who had no wheel. It leans slightly toward the north wall of the church, which is itself nine hundred years old and looks young beside it.

Around its base are headstones. Rows of them. Slate and limestone, weathered soft, the lettering gone shallow. Names, two dates, a line of scripture where the family could afford the extra cutting.

No one reads them.

They cut the grass and, I understand, the church is still open.

The fact is a headstone has a working life of about three generations, and after that it becomes landscape. Your great-grandchildren might find yours. Their children will walk past it on the way to something else.

The stone in the middle of that churchyard has outlived every grave around it by thousands of years.

Eighteenth-century excavation at its base suggested the stone runs as deep below ground as it stands above it.

Half of it is buried, and that is the half doing the work.

Fifty Thousand Stones

The stone at Rudston is not unusual except in size. Across Ireland, Britain, and Brittany there are roughly fifty thousand of these things. Set upright by human hands, deliberately, at enormous cost.

At Carnac in Brittany there are more than three thousand of them in one landscape, raised over something like two and a half thousand years. Twelve converging rows running better than three miles.

No one knows what they are for.

The people who put them up left no writing of which we know, and even their language is unknown.

The French monuments authority says that the Carnac stones have not yet given up the reason they exist. Every explanation is a guess: observatory, processional route, boundary marker, ancestor cult, calendar. Despite the countless analysis of men in lab coats, no one can read these stones.

Fifty thousand stones still standing.

Not one answer left alive.

If you are a man who has been telling himself that building something big will take care of the legacy, this is a hard lesson. Those men moved forty tons by hand. They out-built every one of us. And the meaning evaporated anyway, because a stone cannot say anything. It can only prompt someone to ask.

If no one is left who knows the answer, the stone becomes nothing but a forgotten decoration.

Four Languages

Four cultures looked at an upright stone, and each named a different part of it.

The Breton called it maen hir. Long stone. That is where our word menhir comes from, borrowed into English around 1834. The Breton named its shape, and nothing else.

The Latin called it monumentum, from monere, to remind and to warn. Literally, a thing that reminds you. The same root gives us monitor and admonish. The Latin named its function. Notice what that means. A monument is a reminder by definition. The only real question a monument raises is what it is reminding you of.

When we think of gravestones with think of a memorial, from the Latin root memoria. We name the content. Memory itself.

And the Hebrew called it massebah, from a root meaning *to set up. The Hebrew named the act. The verb. What a man does with his hands.

Shape, function, content, act. Four words, four languages, one rock.

Only in the Old Testament does anybody attach an instruction about where the thing has to point.

The Stones in Canaan

Before Israel came into the land, the land was already full of standing stones.

Archaeologists call them massebot, using the Hebrew word, and they turn up everywhere. At Gezer there is a row of ten of them, the tallest better than three meters, with a carved stone basin set in the middle of the line. Middle Bronze Age. Best guess is that they marked a covenant between towns.

At Hazor, the city Joshua would later burn, roughly thirty standing stones were set in four rows in the final phase of the temple. One of them is incised with a crescent moon and a pair of upraised hands.

Out in the desert, in the southern Negev and eastern Sinai, researchers have documented more than a hundred and forty separate massebot sites, and the count keeps climbing.

The practice spread far and fast. Basically, as Uzi Avner explains, any long stone could become one, if you set it on its narrow side.

The rock is ordinary.

The rock is lying in a field doing nothing.

Standing it up is the entire act.

At Tel ‘Eton, excavators found a standing stone inside a private house, set in the largest room, positioned so you would see it as you came through the door. The excavator’s read is that it served as that household’s religious center from the day the house was built until somebody took it down.

The building was destroyed around 701 BC.

A man had a standing stone in his living room.

To date, no massebah has been dug up that matches a specific story in the Bible.

Jacob, Joshua, and Samuel all have written accounts of the practice and the particular stones are nowhere to be found.

Let us return to this in a moment.

Stones with Instructions

Joshua brings the people across the Jordan on dry ground, and the first thing God has him do on the other side is a construction project.

Twelve men. Twelve stones out of the middle of the riverbed. Carried up and stacked at Gilgal.

And then the reason, given in advance:

When your children ask their fathers in time to come, what do these stones mean, then you shall let your children know. - Joshua 4:6-7

This mechanism is not what most men assume. The stones exist to provoke a question, and a father exists to answer it.

This is the design. A boy walks past a pile of rocks that has no business being there. The strangeness makes him ask. His father tells him. Twenty years later, the boy is a man with sons of his own, walking past the same rocks, and his son asks, and he tells him, because his father told him.

The legacy is the answer, carried in the mouths of men who commanded to keep it.

You’ll read in many of my articles the phrase, build a legacy death cannot take. Stone erodes. Bronze corrodes. Money changes hands three times and forgets who passed it down. What actually survives is transmission running through people who can be read and who will answer when asked.

Which means a man has an obligation older than his mortgage. Be legible enough that your children have something to ask about, and be present enough to answer when they do.

Fail either half and your household becomes Carnac, Rudstone, or the countless other places with unreadable stones and forgotten stories. Something impressive standing in a field, and no one left who knows why.

The Other Pillar

Now, the hard one. Absalom, King David’s son, the beautiful one, the one who murdered his brother and stole his father’s kingdom, also set up a standing stone.

He put it in the King’s Valley, and he named it after himself. Samuel gives us his reasoning in his own words:

I have no son to keep my name in remembrance. - 2 Kingdoms 18:17-18

Same object. Same labor. Same technology as Joshua’s twelve. And the direction is exactly reversed.

Joshua’s stones stand because there will be children to ask.

Absalom’s pillar stands because there is no one to ask.

He looked down the years, saw no one coming who would carry his name, and did what a man does when he thinks the story is about himself. He builds the story a container and put his own name on the outside.

The scripture tells you how it ended. Joab’s men threw Absalom’s body into a pit in the forest and heaped a very great pile of stones on top of it.

Two stone structures for one man. One he set up for himself in the valley. One thrown on top of him in the woods.

Scripture is direct about standing stones. Some it commands and some it forbids, and the object never changes. Moses sets up twelve pillars at Sinai. Jacob sets one up at Bethel and pours oil on it. Joshua sets up a great stone at Shechem and calls it a witness. And the same Law that records all of that says the LORD hates the pillar, and orders Israel to smash the pagan ones already standing. Why?

The stone is neutral. The direction decides everything.

Empty Ground

Back to the thing the archaeologists cannot find.

No massebah in the dirt matches a biblical story.

Hezekiah broke them. Josiah tore them down and ground them to powder. The household stone at Tel ‘Eton, taken down sometime before 701 BC, may be a piece of physical evidence of a man obeying a reform.

The stones are missing because the witness moved.

It moved from stone into a scroll, which is the only monument you can carry into exile.

It moved from the scroll into a Person, whom the New Testament insists on calling the cornerstone, the stone the builders looked at and threw away.

And from Him it moved into men. Joshua setup twelve stones along the Jordan, prototypes of the 12 apostles, a reminder to the children of God, the Christ is coming to dwell with and in us.

Peter does not call us worshippers standing near a stone. He calls us living stones, built into a single house. One house, children of God, unified in and through His redeeming grace and kingdom.

Stone. Scroll. Son. Sons.

Every step of that moved the witness closer to something that could walk into a room, be looked at, and answer a question.

Which brings this into your kitchen.

The Rock Stack and the Cairn

Walk above the treeline on a hiking trail, and you will find cairns. Piles of rock, waist-high, spaced so that when the fog drops and the trail vanishes, you can find the next one and live.

You will never know who built them. Nobody signs a cairn. The man who stacked those stones took real trouble for a stranger he would never meet and got nothing for it, not even credit.

You will also find, at scenic overlooks in the country, the other thing. Little stacked rock towers built for a photograph. Land managers remove them, as they mislead hikers to follow a non-existent route and damage the ground from which they remove the rocks.

Same stones. Same stacking. One points at a route. One points at the person who stacked it.

That second kind is the whole religion of this age, and it has a name.

The cult of self. The modern lie that your life is your own.

The cult of self is tells you to build. It tells you to build loud. Stand out. Make it about you. Get seen. Put your name on the outside of the container, because the container is all there is.

Absalom would have understood the assignment immediately. He was early.

Here is the tell: The cult of self and Absalom arrive at the same place by the same road. A man who is building a monument to himself has usually already given up on there being anyone to ask. He does not really expect a son who wants the answer. So he skips the son and goes straight to the marble.

Most men drift into this. They spend thirty years becoming impressive, no years becoming legible, and then wonder why their children know their job title and not their God.

A Readable Life

Here is the key to what I’m trying to make clear. A man of God is called to be a standing stone.

A standing stone is a readable life. Present, consistent, and still.

Four words, each a physical property of an actual stone in an actual churchyard. Go to Rudston and check.

Readable. You can see the stone from across the field or along the trail and know something is there on purpose. A man’s life is readable when the people around him can tell what he stands for without having to interview him about it. Most men are hiding something. They are unreadable because they don’t speak; they don’t say what they believe, and when they do their actions don’t match their words.

Present. The stone remains where someone set it. Its entire usefulness depends on being in one location for a long time. Modern men focus on managing the next thing. They might physically be in the room and mentally at the job site or on their phone. There is no such thing as a standing stone that shows up occasionally. A man who is not there is not a marker of anything, however impressive he is elsewhere.

Consistent. It is the same stone all the way through. Cut it open and the core matches the face. Weather takes the surface down over centuries, and the material underneath is identical. A man is consistent when the version of him at the altar, in the meeting, and at eleven at night with his wife are recognizably one person. They can fake everything else on this list for about eighteen months. Consistency requires consistency; nothing else will suffice.

Still. And here is where modern man will read me wrong, because I have approached stillness wrong myself.

The modern mind hears stillness and thinks of quiet, slow, a mature man entering some gentle later season in life where he stops reaching for anything. This is what I thought, and I was wrong.

Still means planted deep enough to bear weight.

Today, we think of stillness as therapeutic “me time” or taking a rest.

Forty tons of gritstone, with half its length in the dirt, is under enormous, continuous load, and it is winning. It has been winning for four thousand years. This is an active stillness. A deeply anchored stillness.

A man remains still when he doesn't let the next opportunity, grievance, notification, or late-night idea that sounds like a calling sway him. You can lean on a still man. People can build things upon him.

Notice the order those four run in, because it is the order you actually meet a stone. You see it from a distance. You walk up to it. You put your hand on it and find it solid. And only if you dig do you find out how deep it goes.

Readable is what people get. Still is what makes it possible.

Standing on a Rock

An icon of a man praying on a rock is in a cathedral in San Francisco.

When I visited the cathedral, the icon spoke to me; I photographed it. The buried half was doing all the work. I didn’t know the saint’s name or his story, but I could read it before I could explain it. Months later, I attended my first Eastern Orthodox men’s fellowship, which has for its patron St. Seraphim of Sarov.

He is a Russian monk who went into the forest and stayed there. For years. He didn’t have an audience, a platform, and he wrote no great correspondence. Tradition holds that for a thousand days and a thousand nights he prayed on a stone in the forest.

A man on a rock, becoming one. Here is the photo I took of the icon before I knew this story:

Then people started walking out to find him. Thousands of them eventually, peasants, nobles, and bishops, over narrow trails, to a man who had nothing to offer them but himself. He greeted each one the same way, whoever they were and whatever they had done, calling them his joy.

This is presence and consistency in a single gesture, repeated for years, to strangers.

He left a sentence which is clearly readable:

Acquire the spirit of peace, and thousands around you will be saved.

Today’s gurus will tell you to build the platform, grow the audience, and get the message out. The saint says, “Acquire the spirit of peace“, which is interior, hidden, takes decades, produces nothing you can screenshot, and the effect on the people around you takes care of itself.

I Had This Wrong

I had worked most of this out for years. The stones, the four words, the readable life. And I had drawn a conclusion from it that felt humble, mature, and deeply spiritual, which is exactly how you should know to suspect a conclusion.

After decades of building and setting up the standing stone, I came to the conclusion I needed to slow down to work on stillness. The restlessness I had carried for twenty years, the thing that built organizations, wrote books, and would not let me sit, was the enemy. A standing stone is still, and I was not still, and therefore the work in front of me was to quiet down, want less, and settle into some slower season.

I brought that to my priest, Father Samuel, expecting him to confirm it.

He took it apart.

He did not think the restlessness was the problem at all. Then he pointed me back to the Ladder we have been climbing together, and the instruction was not rest. It was climb. Understand the purpose of the restlessness.

I had confused stillness with stopping.

The stone at Rudston is still standing. It holds forty tons against four thousand years of English weather because it is anchored. Take away the anchor, and the stone does not acquire the spirit of peace. It falls over.

A man who mistakes stopping for stillness becomes a rock lying in a field, which is what every other stone is until someone sets it on its narrow side.

I was looking to kill the restlessness. Father Samuel directed me to place the restlessness in climbing the holy Ladder.

This correction is valuable because it’s what a standing stone does. It came from a man who told me, “No,” in a readable way, who has been present, consistent, and spoke it with enough stillness that I understood what I had gotten wrong.

Be a Standing Stone

Years ago, I wrote a line in a book about the Hebrew Scriptures and their habit of standing stones up to mark what God had done. I wrote that the lives of God’s children are standing stones pointing to Him.

I meant it and set out to make my life a standing stone pointing to Him. I have spent the years since being outrun by my sentence, which is a humbling way to learn that you can write true things well before you can live them.

Here is what I have learned since writing that book. Every one of those biblical stones exists within a relationship.

Jacob’s stone at Bethel is about a promise made to him.

Joshua’s twelve are aimed at children who will ask.

Samuel’s Ebenezer marks help that came from outside himself.

The stone is standing there, so a conversation will happen.

Absalom’s pillar is the only one with a man’s name on it, and it is the only one that had no one to talk to.

I have a granddaughter. She is two months old. She will never know me as a young man. Every version of me she will ever meet is the one I am building starting now, and one day, if I have been legible enough to raise the question, she is going to ask about something I did, believed, or refused, and someone will have to answer her.

We can think it is the number on a building, the title behind our names, the size of our bank account, or the dates cut on a slab of stone and read by approximately 15 people for 30 years.

Your gravestone and eulogy will say nearly nothing. The most expensive marker in that churchyard says less than a father does in one honest answer at a kitchen table.

So set the other stone up while you can:

Live rooted in stillness, consistent in character, present with others, and clearly readable.

Be legible enough that your children have to ask.

Be there when they do.

Take your restlessness and aim it up, and let a man who knows you tell you when you have aimed it wrong.

Remember, a standing stone points past itself entirely, to the God who did the thing worth remembering. It keeps pointing long after the man who set it up is dust, and his name is gone from the valley.

When everyone else is looking for the marble, a big audience, or a platform, remember this path is available to any man who wants it.

Four thousand years in a Yorkshire churchyard, and half of it underground.

Go be the half nobody sees.

Build a legacy death cannot take.

There is no Goliath on the horizon with a spear like a “weaver’s beam.”

Today, men silence the alarm clock. Postpone the difficult conversation. Put off what he means to start until Monday. Skip the prayer he keeps meaning to pray. Avoid the version of himself standing on the other side of some wall he will not climb.

If you live this way, you cannot look backwards and point to a single dramatic moment you lost the fight.

Today’s fight is lost by not showing up. One day the man you were supposed to become is simply gone and you cannot remember trading him away.

There is a piece of marble in Rome that refuses to let a man pretend he does not know this.

When I saw these statues across Italy, in Florence and in Rome, I had to share this story with you and bring you these photos. I pray this resonates with you!

The Statue That Will Not Let You Look Away

In 1623, a twenty-four-year-old named Gian Lorenzo Bernini carved a David.

He was not the first.

Donatello had given the world a David standing calm over a severed head, the battle already won.

Verrocchio had given the world a spirited and proud David with a satisfied smile as an elegant page boy and a hero of liberty.

Michelangelo had given the world a David contemplating the fight before it began, beautiful, poised, still.

Bernini did something neither of them dared. He carved the decisive moment of courageous effort itself.

His David is not posing. He is not flexing for an audience or grinning at victory won.

At his feet lay the discarded armor given to him by King Saul, the discarded accoutrements and trappings of any age.

He is mid-motion, body wound like a spring at the instant before release.

The torso twists.

The muscles stand taut under the skin.

The lips press into a hard line. The brow furrows. The eyes lock onto something past the edge of the marble, something you cannot see and he cannot look away from.

There is no applause in that face. No filter. No performance. No quiet confidence of a victory assured.

There is only the raw silence before the stone leaves the sling.

And here is the detail most people walk past:

The jawline is his. The furrowed brow is his. He stood in front of a mirror, held by an assistant, and put himself into the man in the arena.

He understood something the modern world has worked very hard to make you forget.

The fight is not a story about a hero who lived long ago.

The fight is yours.

The face on David is supposed to be yours too.

What the Cult of Self Sells Instead

We live downstream of a lie so total that most men never see it, because it is the water they swim in and the air they breathe.

The lie is that your life is your own. That your years belong to your comfort and your preferences. That you are the protagonist of a story you authored, accountable to no one, and that the highest goal of a man is to feel good, look successful, and avoid anything that hurts.

The cult of self.

This cult trains you, from a thousand directions at once, to consume rather than to fight, to soothe rather than to strive, to manage your anxiety instead of facing the thing causing it.

The cult of self is killing men.

Men die from despair, suicide, overdose, and drink at more than three times the rate of women.

The researchers who went looking for why found something the headlines missed.

The dying did not start with the opioids. It tracked the emptying of the churches, the moment men stopped showing up to worship and started showing up to numb.

A man without a fight worth his life does not coast peacefully into old age. He rots in place while the world tells him he is winning.

Bernini’s David is the exact opposite of that man.

This is why the statue still works four hundred years later.

It is a sermon in marble against the cult of self.

The Fight Is Older Than the Statue

When Bernini carved David striking at Goliath, he was carving the oldest promise in Scripture.

In the third chapter of Genesis, after the fall, God speaks to the serpent.

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

The heel striking the serpent’s head.

The man in the arena, taking the wound and landing the blow.

Every fight a man faces is a small echo of that one. The Church Fathers understood this better than we do. They treated the Christian life as warfare, unseen and constant, fought first in the territory of a man’s own heart.

Saint Paul names the enemy.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.”

The desert monks had a word for the particular demon that whispers to a man that nothing he does matters, that he should lie down, that the fight is not worth it. They called it acedia, the noonday demon, and treated it as an enemy combatant.

This is the part the cult of self cannot allow you to know.

Your restlessness is the feeling of a soldier who has left his post. Do not medicate it away. Do not ignore it. The way back is not more comfort. It is the fight.

The Fight Is Now

Here is the rule and the point of the statue:

Every man has a Goliath. For one it is the bottle. For another it is the screen that eats the hours he swore he would give his children. For another it is the cowardice that keeps him silent in his own house when he should lead. For another it is the soft, respectable despair of a man who built everything the world told him to build and cannot say why none of it satisfies.

You do not get to choose whether your Goliath shows up, he’s already in the room. You only get to choose whether you face him with a sling in your hand or whether you spend your life pretending he is not there until he wins by default.

Bernini froze the one second that matters, the instant the will coils and the man commits.

The victory is Gods.

The decision to join the fight is yours.

This is the second every man actually lives in, every single day, and the cult of self is engineered to talk you out of it.

So look closely at that face one more time. The locked eyes. The clenched jaw. The spiritual fury behind the sling.

That face is supposed to be yours.

What This Asks of You

You will not win your fight in a museum, and you will not win it by admiring a statue.

You win it the way David won, by picking up the one stone in front of you and stepping into the arena before you feel ready, because you will never feel ready.

So name your Goliath. Out loud, today.

Then take the first stone, the single concrete action you have been avoiding, the one your soul names the instant you stop performing for yourself. Pick it up this morning, before the noise starts, before the day talks you out of it again.

Then do it tomorrow.

And again.

And again.

The fight is not won in an afternoon. It is won in thousands of instances a man chooses the arena over the couch, the prayer corner before the hustle-and-bustle, the hard conversation instead of the next drink. And he keeps making these choices until the choice becomes the man he is.

This is how you build something that outlives you by becoming the father, husband, and man your sons can watch.

Let God transfigure you, slowly and deeply, into the man you are meant to be.

Ten soldiers guard him. He calls them his leopards.

He is old. He is a bishop.

He is being dragged to Rome to be torn apart by beasts in the arena for the entertainment of a crowd.

He could stop it. There are Christians in every city he passes through, and they have the money and the connections to buy his freedom. They beg to. And he writes ahead to tell them, in plain words, to leave him alone. Do not rob me of dying for Christ. Let me be ground like wheat in the teeth of the lions, so that I may become the pure bread of God.

His name is Ignatius of Antioch. He died around the year 108.

The seven letters he wrote on that death march are one of the best places a modern Christian can start reading, for a reason most modern Christians have never been told.

The story of the Bible did not end with the Bible.

A Question Every Christian Should Ask

If you are a man who reads, you have asked it: besides the Bible, what should I read?

It is a good question. It is also a question that, asked honestly, exposes a problem underneath it.

The unspoken assumption is that you have the Bible handled. You own one. You have read parts of it. You can find Romans without the table of contents. The Bible is the settled thing, and now you are looking for the supplements.

Reading is important.

A man who doesn’t read allows the loudest influences to form him.

Today, those loud influences make him stupid, anxious, and easy to be sold.

Picking up almost any serious book is better than the alternative the world hands you. Reading a serious book instead of scrolling is an upgrade. The most serious book is Holy Scripture.

Reading is the difference between feeding your soul and feeding it to an algorithm.

The Bible is important. Obviously. It is the Word of God. I have read it deeply and once walked through the entire Old Testament through several series of lectures with local and online audiences, hours of it, tracing the shape of the whole thing end to end.

Yet, you probably do not know how to read it. And neither did I for a long time.

You Received a Book and No Instructions

Here is the thing no one says from a modern pulpit.

The modern Christian believes he can pick up the Bible, open it cold, read it like a novel or a manual, and extract its meaning by himself with nothing but his own sincerity. Just him, the text, and the Holy Spirit. No church required. No history required. No frame required.

The Bible’s authors did not intend for it to be read this way.

The Bible did not fall out of the sky leather-bound with gilt edges and a concordance in the back. It emerged from the worshipping life of the Church.

The Church was reading these texts aloud in the liturgy, breaking bread, baptizing, praying, and being martyred for generations before anyone sat in a council and settled which books belonged between the covers.

The Bible came from the ancient, undivided Church, specifically out of the liturgical life. Which means the Book assumes a context no modern church has. The Bible assumes you are standing inside the ancient sacramental and liturgical life that produced it.

If you try to read the Bible apart from the Church’s liturgical life, the very soil from which it grew, it is like studying an instruction manual for a quantum computer without ever having touched the machine, observed its operations, or been trained by those who built it.

Most modern churches operate as if they can grasp the difference between bits and qubits, superposition and entanglement, simply by reading the manual in isolation, without any living reference or communal practice.

Father Alexander Schmemann wrote a small, dangerous book about this called For the Life of the World. His argument, made plain, is that the whole world is sacramental. Worship is not a religious activity you bolt onto a secular life. It is a lived reality in which everything, including Scripture, becomes legible. If you do not understand the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church, you simply will not have a framework for reading Scripture rightly. You will have words without the room in which they were spoken.

I am not saying don’t read the Bible.

I am saying know what you are holding, and know what you are missing.

A man who reads Scripture and knows he is only seeing a small part of the picture is in a far better place than the man who reads it and is sure he has the whole thing. The first man is humble before the text. The second one has made the text small enough to fit in his own hand.

The Part They Never Told You: It’s Still Going On

Now the part that changes everything.

Most Christians read the Bible as a closed story.

The Bible starts in a garden, it ends with a vision on Patmos, the cover snaps shut, and we are living in the long afterward, waiting around for the sequel. The drama happened. We missed it. Now we keep the rules until we die or worse we wait for the big Apocalypse at the end.

The Christian picture of time differs dramatically from this modern way of minimizing scripture.

Christians are living inside the Bible.

Consider how Luke’s writing works. He wrote a Gospel (Luke), and then he wrote a second volume, the Acts of the Apostles, and he opened that second volume by referring to his “first book.” Some readers across the centuries have noticed that the Greek he uses for “first” can hint at a series still unfinished, wondering whether Luke imagined a third volume that never came. A minority reading, an inference, not a settled fact, but it should get you thinking.

Then look at how Acts ends:

Paul remained two whole years in his own hired lodging; and he received all that came in to him, preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, without prohibition.

Acts 28:30-31

It does not resolve. Paul is under house arrest in Rome, preaching, and the narrative simply stops, mid-stride, doors open. No death scene. No “the end.”

It is the only book in the Bible that was never meant to be finished. The Acts of the Apostles is still being written. The chapters since the year 100 are the lives of the saints.

The ancient Church’s saints have the same drama, the same scale, and the same God operating through ordinary flesh against the prevailing powers of the age, a continuous process.

Martyrs are Acts chapter 200.

Desert fathers are Acts chapter 300.

The man whose name you carry, the saint at your baptism, is a living chapter.

The story of the Bible runs straight through the door at the end of Acts and out into history, and it has your name in it somewhere if you will let it.

Which is exactly why Ignatius matters.

Wheat in the Teeth of the Lions

Go back to the road to Rome.

Ignatius was, by tradition, a disciple of the Apostle John.

The man who had leaned against the chest of Christ at the Last Supper had taught the man writing these letters.

He was bishop of Antioch, appointed by St. Peter, in the city where the word Christian was first used.

He is not a distant figure quoting a tradition. He is the tradition, one human link from the Lord Himself, and he is in chains.

And on that march, knowing what waits for him in the arena, he writes theology. He writes seven letters to churches along the route, and what he hammers on, again and again, with the lions practically in earshot, tells you exactly what a man believes when there is no reason to pretend.

He writes about unity. Hold together, he begs them. Do not splinter. A church scattered into a thousand private opinions is no church. The church will never divide.

He writes about the bishop. Stay close to your bishop, he says, the way the strings stay tuned to the lyre, so the entire community sings one note instead of noise. The Church for Ignatius is not a loose federation of individuals who happen to agree. It is an ordered body, visible, structured, real and in unity.

He writes about the Eucharist bluntly enough to make a modern man uncomfortable. The bread and the cup, he says, are the flesh and blood of Christ. Not a symbol of an absent Lord. The real presence of a present One. He calls it the medicine of immortality. The men who were taught by the apostles did not think they were eating a metaphor.

And under all of it runs a conviction: this faith is embodied. It is incarnational. God took on flesh, real flesh that bled, and so the Christian life is lived in flesh, in bread, in water, in oil, in the bodies of the saints. Christ is the icon of the invisible God. And the saints, transfigured by Him, become icons of Christ. So we honor them. We venerate them. We ask the ones who finished the race to pray for those still running. And we continue to record more holy chapters in the lives lived in the one, holy, apostolic, catholic life of Christ’s Body.

Today, sadly, most “churches” in your town reject all of it: the unified holy Church, bishop in apostolic succession, the Eucharist as true flesh, the honoring of the saints, the incarnational theology, and the embodied sacramental reality of it all.

Ignatius would not recognize the building down the road with the coffee bar, the fog machine, and the man in distressed jeans or a modern suit telling you that you are basically fine.

What You Are Actually Choosing

For a long time, I read like a modern man. I treated the Bible as my private possession, a book I could master with enough sincerity and a good study guide. I was sure of my own reading. Except, it was the cult of self wearing a Bible cover, the old lie that my life and my faith were my own, mine to assemble from the raw materials however seemed right to me.

The truth is older, harder, and better than that.

Stop trying to invent a faith and privately decode the Bible.

The saints handed you something two thousand years old, soaked in the blood of men like Ignatius, and your job is to enter it.

This is why I tell men to read St. Ignatius.

He is an introduction to the family you can actually belong to. When you read those seven letters from inside the ancient faith, you are listening to your own great-great-grandfather, in chains, telling you what he died certain of.

High drama.

Real stakes.

A man becoming wheat in the teeth of lions so he could become the bread of God. Don’t you want to be a part of that story? You can.

The Bible is open. The Acts of the Apostles is still being written. The only question is whether your life is a chapter in it, or a story that ends at your funeral.

One of those is a small story.

You were not made for a small story.

A deadline. A promise to your son. A thought you had in the truck three days ago that felt important, that felt like it might have been the thought, and now it is gone, and the only thing left is the hole where it used to be.

It’s an insidious plan, and the world does it intentionally.

The Rented Mind

The cult of self has a real estate model, and you should understand it, because you are the property.

It wants you reactive. Every platform you open is a furnished room for your attention, rent paid in the seconds turned into hours of your one brief life, decorated by a stranger, optimized by a machine, and bulldozed the moment a louder tenant comes along.

Researchers who study interrupted work have found it takes a man roughly twenty-three minutes to return to a thought after a single interruption. Now count your interruptions before breakfast.

A man whose mind lives in rented rooms builds nothing there. The landlord keeps rearranging the furniture.

This is an ancient problem. When you rent out the rooms of your mind, you can’t be watchful. The inner gate has already been breached.

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

A wandering mind is an open door in a city wall.

And here is what almost nobody tells you about the men who solved this problem millennia ago: they wrote things down.

The prophet was commanded directly: “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tablets, that a herald may run that readeth it.” (Habakkuk 2:2)

The great natural philosopher, Aristotle, encouraged observation, record-keeping, reflection, and systematic organization of ideas.

Marcus Aurelius governed an empire by day and kept a private notebook by night that he intended no one to read; we call it the Meditations.

The Philokalia, the great Christian anthology of watchfulness, is a curated vault, compiled and kept by monks who refused to let a thousand years of hard-won attention evaporate.

The men who built inner lives that outlived them gave their thoughts a home.

So here is the principle this whole essay hangs on: An unwritten thought is a door left open; write your thoughts down to weigh, keep, or cast them out.

This is what a written page does. A goal becomes a commitment. A temptation written becomes a pattern you can name. A fear becomes a question you can bring to God. You weigh, store, and order your thoughts.

A Word From a Man With Ink on His Hands

Admittedly, I love to write, journal, and plan on paper. Systems are my trade, and missed details cost real money and jobs, and I tell you the most important system I run does not belong to any employer.

It is a small stack of books, one piece of software, and a rule of life that holds them together.

I carry a pocket prayer book and what I call a watchfulness (neptic) journal on my person, everywhere, the way other men carry a phone. A Codex, a bound book of my most important insights, handwritten, and that is the book that goes with me to discipleship lessons with my Father Confessor. A gratitude journal full of stickers and stories, written in plain language on purpose, for my children and grandchildren to hold in their hands one day. And for the working life, the meetings, the projects, the essays (including this one), the book I am writing, I keep a digital vault.

This keeps me ordered.

Your stack will look different from mine. It should. What follows is a framework. The tools serve the need. The need is what matters.

The Five Needs for an Ordered Mind

Every man who wants to govern his inner life has five recurring needs. Different tools can meet more than one of them. The same tool, used poorly, meets none.

Know your needs first. Then pick your tools.

1. Capture

Your mind is a horrible storage unit. The first need is a single trusted place where every loose thought, idea, task, and observation lands the moment it arrives.

The medium matters less than the trust. A pocket notebook. A single note on your phone. Obsidian open on your go-to device. What matters is that your mind learns, reliably, that captured thoughts do not get lost. Once the trust in the capture system is built the mind will stop waking you at 2 AM to recite the list.

This is ancient watchfulness in practical terms.

A thought arrives at the gate. The watchman writes down its name. The gate stays guarded. Nothing enters unexamined, and nothing important disappears.

2. Examine

Capture is the beginning. Examination is the practice.

You can weigh a written thought. A temptation named is no longer nameless. A pattern you can see is a pattern you can take to confession, to prayer, to the guides in your life.

Unexamined thoughts are movements seeking entrance, and an unguarded inner life is an open door to the enemy.

Writing about what is actually going on inside you (the fear, the failure, the recurring sin) creates a cognitive distance from the experience. You stop being inside it and start being able to see it, spiritually and factually. The distance is the only place where repentance can live. It is where an honest conversation with God begins.

This is the need your watchfulness journal meets. Some men keep it separately in a planner or other tool. Some fold it into their pocket journal, as I do. The tool is secondary. The examination is the point.

3. Distill

Not every thought that survives examination belongs in a permanent record. But some do.

There is a category of insight that only comes through battle: the truth you did not believe until you lived it, the lesson your failure actually taught you, the moment the Scripture stopped being words and became something you understood in your body. This belongs somewhere it will not get lost in the daily flood.

This is the need my Codex meets. It is a record of battles fought and insights earned. Marcus Aurelius filled his notebooks with exactly this kind of distilled truth, things he knew he needed to say again and again to himself until they were real. Many a saint’s diary is the same: observation, prayer, and hard-won understanding that allowed them to return to, refine, and live more deeply.

A man with a Codex is building something. He is accumulating earned wisdom that he can hand to a son, give to a spiritual brother, or simply return to on the morning everything feels uncertain.

4. Remember

A man has appointments and projects. Promises to his wife, deadlines for his team, a book he’s writing, and a house that requires a new roof before October all weigh on him. He needs a place to hold all of that so his mind is free to think rather than to track.

This is the practical need. But a planner is also a stewardship tool, a form of faithfulness. The man who keeps his commitments, who shows up prepared, who finishes what he starts, who remembers what he promised, is a man his family and his team can trust.

Gratitude lives here too, woven through the practice. Many planners and journals prompt it deliberately, and they are right. The man who reviews his week and names only what went wrong is not seeing his week clearly. Gratitude is accuracy. It is the posture of thanksgiving (the Eucharistic life), seeing life as a gift, that keeps planning from becoming mere productivity and remembering from becoming mere logistics.

5. Execute

A captured thought that never becomes action is just organized clutter. A distilled insight that stays in the Codex and never shapes a decision is empty philosophy. The ordered mind has to close the loop: weigh the thought, keep what is true, and then act.

For my working life, this is where Obsidian lives, using tasks and notes captured, remembered, and logging execution. It is a free piece of software built on a principle worth trusting: your notes are plain text files, on your own machine, owned by you, readable in fifty years, with no algorithm deciding what you see and no company holding your thinking hostage. Every project, every meeting, every chapter of the book I am writing lives in one vault that links the way a mind actually works. Built from twenty-five years of planning, leadership, and experience. It is powerful because of what went into it, not because of what the software does by itself.

It is a tool. A powerful tool in the stack and the most replaceable. If it vanished tomorrow, I would lose some convenience and none of the practice, The practice was never in the software. The sages and philosophers had no apps. The desert monks who guarded their minds, wrote things down, and built innner lives we are still reading twelve centuries later.

The cult of self would love for you to spend the next month researching note-taking systems. It is a substitute for the work. Instead, pick up a pen tonight, write three things you will execute tomorrow, and check them off as you complete them. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

The Pitfalls and the Grace

Three ways this goes wrong, because I have done all three.

The new system becomes the new scroll. Tinkering with your setup feels like work and costs like entertainment. If you have rebuilt your folder structure three times this month and written nothing true in it, the tool has become the distraction it was supposed to cure.

The vault becomes a museum. Pages of captured quotes and clipped articles, none of it weighed, none of it acted upon. A full notebook and an unchanged man. Capture is the beginning of the practice. Examination is the practice.

The blank page becomes a judge. You miss a week and the empty pages accuse you, so you quit. Brother, the Fathers fell down daily, and the whole of their counsel was the same two words: begin again. A journal with gaps in it is the journal of a real man living a real life. Write today’s date and keep going.

A Few Tools Worth Knowing

Here is what I actually use and what I hand to men who are starting from scratch.

For the pocket: Field Notes 3.5 x 5.5 memo books, American-made, unpretentious, cheap enough to write in without reverence. I keep mine inside a leather cover alongside a pocket prayer book. It goes everywhere. It is the most important piece of the stack and the least expensive.

For the Codex: The Leuchtturm1917 Bullet Journal is what I use. Ignore the system if you want. Use the journal. Numbered pages, three ribbon markers, heavy paper, built to last. It is a serious book that takes serious ink.

For men who have never planned deliberately: The Full Focus Planner by Michael Hyatt is the best on-ramp I know. It connects your goals to your weekly priorities to your three most important daily actions. Guided videos walk you through it. I have handed this to more struggling men and women than I can count. It also prompts gratitude and weekly review, which matters.

For simpler planning: Any ruled notebook with a weekly spread works. The method matters more than the brand. If the Full Focus feels like too much, start with a legal pad and three questions: What must happen this week? What am I grateful for? What did I learn?

For the working life: Obsidian is free, runs on your machine, stores plain text files you will be able to open in fifty years, and has no algorithm deciding what you see. It has a learning curve and is not the place to start. If you have a complex planning, tracking, scheduling, journaling system handling multiple areas of life, it will pay dividends to the man who puts serious thought into it.

For the gratitude journal: Find something you will not want to put in a drawer. Mine has Bible verses printed on the pages and gold-foiled edges and is now covered in stickers. It was a gift. Your grandchildren will hold it someday. Buy accordingly.

The Line in the Sand

Nearly every system around you engineers itself on the assumption that you will never organize your own mind. The feed is betting on it. The advertisers are betting on it. The whole furnished-room economy of modern attention is betting that you will keep renting forever.

The world needs men who govern their own minds, on ground they own, before God.

A man like that is valuable in any culture and able to stand firm against the headlines of a decadent age. His wife gets his actual attention. His children watch him close a notebook and look up, fully there. His decisions get cleaner because his thinking has a place to happen. And when he dies, he does not just leave assets. He leaves pages. A Codex that shows his sons that wisdom was real in their house. A gratitude journal whose pages prove their father saw his life as a gift and said so. The written witness that their father lived awake.

Forty years of scrolling leaves nothing behind.

Forty years of writing leaves a library.

We have a joke between us, the kind that only works because it is true. We are evil and retarded, and we go to confession all the time. Glory to God. You laugh, and then you realize you have just confessed the whole human condition in a few words. A man who knows he is a wreck and keeps walking back to the only place that washes him clean without despair. This is the beginning of everything.

We were at lunch. A young man, a dear brother in Christ, new like me to the ancient faith and burning with it. And somewhere during the meal, he asked me a question most men are too proud to ask out loud.

What do you see in me?

I teased him first. A goober who keeps getting back up.

He smiled. But I meant it, and I needed him to hear that I meant it, so I told him the rest.

The Zeal Will Fade. The Falling and Rising Will Not.

I told him what I believe about the Church in this country. That the Orthodox faith is going to keep growing in America for decades.

Men are waking up.

People are tired of a religion that asks nothing and a culture that asks everything and gives back a hollow emptiness. They are going to come looking for something older than their grandfathers, something with weight, and they are going to find it.

And when they come, the generation that gets there first will have an unimpressive job: To still be standing.

So I told him the truth about his zeal. It will lessen. The fire he feels right now, the one that gets him to every vigil and every fast and every page of the Fathers, that particular heat is not going to last at this temperature. It is not supposed to. No man stays at a sprint. The new convert glow burns hot and burns out, and a lot of men panic when it cools, and they mistake the cooling for the end.

Yet, it is the beginning of the part that matters.

Because what the next generation will need from this young man is not his enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is cheap and it is everywhere and it evaporates the first hard winter. What they will need is the goober who never quit the fight. The one who kept getting back up. The one who was still in the pew, still in the line for confession, still there, twenty years after the glow wore off, when some other young man burning with his own first fire looks around for proof that this thing can actually be carried for a lifetime.

That young man will not need a sermon. He will need to see you still standing. This is the whole witness.

Then I Told Him About My Wife

He was not expecting me to turn the conversation to marriage. But it is the same conversation. It has always been the same conversation.

The honeymoon ends. Every married man finds this out, usually around the time he stops being surprised by it and starts being disappointed by it. The zeal of the early love, the heat of it, fades the same way the convert’s fire fades. And a lot of men do the same panicked thing with their marriage that they do with their faith. They feel the cooling, they mistake it for the dying, and they go looking for the heat somewhere else.

What they never learned is that the cooling was making room for something the heat could never build.

Because here is what I told him, and I told him plainly. Today my wife is more beautiful to me than she has ever been. Not because of youthful zeal. Not because of the way the early love felt. Because of long-practiced faithfulness. Because of the hours nobody saw. The arguments we worked through instead of around. The patience that did not feel like patience at the time, it felt like grinding, and only later did I see it was being made into something.

A new husband loves his wife the way a new convert loves the Church. Hot, certain, easy. A faithful husband loves his wife the way an old monk loves the Church. Through the dryness. Through the silence. Through the seasons when the feeling is gone and only the vow remains, and he keeps the vow anyway, and discovers on the far side of keeping it that the love is deeper than the feeling ever was.

Saint John Chrysostom told husbands to say to their wives: “I have taken you in my arms, and I love you, and I prefer you to my life itself.” He did not say that to men in the first flush of romance. He said it to men who had to choose it, daily, for decades, long after the romance had been replaced by something heavier and better.

The Church Trains You for the Marriage.

This is the part that took him back. I watched it land.

The Church of Christ, the ancient faith, needs from this young man exactly what a good marriage will require of him. The same muscle. The same man.

Faithfulness when the feeling is gone. Showing up when showing up is the only thing left to give. Staying in the fight long after the part that felt like victory has worn down into the part that just feels like duty, and then discovering, years in, that the duty was the love all along, deepened past anything the feeling could have reached.

The Church is teaching him how to be a husband. The discipline of the fasts, the rhythm of the prayers, the humility of the confession line, the showing up when you do not feel it, that is the training ground. A man who can stay faithful to Christ through the dry seasons is being built into a man who can stay faithful to a wife through hers.

And it runs the other direction too. The marriage will teach him how to belong to the Body of Christ. The patience he learns at his own kitchen table, the dying to self he learns in the small daily friction of loving one specific imperfect person, that is the same dying that makes a man useful to a parish, to a brotherhood, to the long slow work of carrying a faith across a generation.

He hopes to marry one day. He said so. And I think in that moment he understood something most men never connect: that the way he loves Christ now is the rehearsal for the way he will love his wife later, and the way he loves his wife later will be the proof of how he loves Christ. They are one.

What I Want the Goober to Know

The world will tell you the goal is to keep the fire hot. To chase the feeling. To be impressive, in your faith and in your marriage both. That is the cult of self talking, the lie that your life is about your experience of it, your zeal, your glow, your highlight reel.

It is not. Your life is about what you build that outlasts the feeling.

A marriage that gets more beautiful as it gets older. A faith that gets deeper as it gets quieter. A name your children say with weight after you are gone. None of that is built by zeal. All of it is built by the goober who kept getting back up, on his knees in the confession line, at the table with his wife, in the pew when the glow was long gone, still there, still faithful, still in the fight.

So here is what I see in you, brother.

I see a man being trained, by the Church and for a wife, in the only thing that has ever mattered. I see a man who is going to stop sprinting and learn to walk, and walk a long way. I see the man some young convert thirty years from now is going to look at and finally believe it can be done.

Keep getting up. That is the whole thing. That was always the whole thing.

The grills are cold.

The folding chairs are back in the garage.

Somewhere a city crew is sweeping the last of the spent shells off Main Street, and the bunting that hung from every porch and storefront is starting to look tired in the heat. It was a good show. The biggest this country has thrown in your lifetime. Two hundred and fifty years, and the people who run things spared no expense reminding you of it.

Celebration and community are good things. A nation should mark its years. A people with no memory have no future, and gratitude is right for men who have been handed as much as we have been handed. Freedom. A frontier that built a certain kind of soul. The pioneer spirit that is now catching rockets ships on their launch pads like something out of a book. There is real glory in that, and a serious man does not sneer at it.

But it is the day after now. The crowd has gone home. And the morning after is when a man tells himself the truth he could not hear over the noise.

So here is the truth. That number on the banners is not just a birthday. It is a clock.

The Number Nobody Wanted to Read Aloud

There was a British general named Sir John Glubb who spent his life in the field and his retirement in the archives. He studied empires, eleven of them, from the Assyrians to his own British one, and he went looking for a pattern. He found one. He published it in 1976 in a quiet little essay called The Fate of Empires, and almost nobody read it.

What he found is this. The average lifespan of imperial greatness, measured across three thousand years and across every religion, race, and form of government you can name, is about two hundred and fifty years. Ten generations. The number barely moves. Rome moved through it. Persia moved through it. Spain, the Ottomans, the British. Different centuries, different religious views, same arc.

And the arc has stages. The Age of Pioneers, when hard men do hard things and build something from nothing. The Age of Conquests. The Age of Commerce, when the wealth starts pouring in. The Age of Affluence, when the wealth is simply there. The Age of Intellect, when the universities swell and the clever crowd out the courageous. And then the last one. The one Glubb gave the heaviest name.

An age of decadence, he wrote, is marked by an obsession with celebrity. By frivolity. By a defensive crouch where a confident people used to stand. By a widening dependence on the state to provide what families and communities once provided for themselves.

Different Roads, Same Destination

If it were only Glubb, you could wave it off. One amateur historian, one tidy theory, easy to ignore. But Glubb is not alone, and that is the part that should make a serious man sit up.

A historian named Neil Howe, working from generational cycles and not from empires at all, has spent thirty years arguing that this country moves through a recurring “fourth turning,” a season of crisis and upheaval that arrives roughly every eighty years, on the length of a long human life. By his reckoning the current one climaxes in the early 2030s. Different method entirely. Same neighborhood on the calendar.

Then there is Peter Turchin, who does not deal in seasons or archetypes at all. He deals in data. He tracks something he calls elite overproduction, too many credentialed people fighting over too few real seats at the table, and he watches what that pressure has done to every society it has ever touched. His models pointed at instability peaking in the 2020s, cresting around 2030. Three men. Three completely different roads. One destination.

When one prophet names a date, you are right to be skeptical. When three men using three unrelated methods keep arriving at the same stretch of road, skepticism stops being wisdom and starts being denial.

This is not a prediction that the lights go out next Tuesday. Glubb himself said empires rarely fall to a single blow. They hollow. They get loud and brittle at the same time, and the noise is loudest right at the end. A grand and expensive party is not evidence against decadence. It is the single most reliable symptom of it. Bread and circuses are not a new accusation. The men who first used the phrase were watching it happen.

The Disease Has a Much Older Name

Here is where the businessman in me has to step aside and let the Church speak, because Glubb described the symptom and the Fathers diagnosed the disease sixteen centuries before he was born.

When Rome fell in his own lifetime, Saint Augustine sat down and wrote the book that explains all of this better than any modern can. He said there are finally only two cities a man can belong to, and they are built out of two different loves. “The earthly city was created by self-love reaching the point of contempt for God. The Heavenly City by the love of God carried as far as contempt of self.”

Sit with what that means against everything above. Glubb studied eleven empires and concluded they died of affluence curdling into self-regard, of a people turning inward to worship their own comfort. Augustine had already named the engine of it. The earthly city is built out of self-love. It is not that empires occasionally fall into selfishness near the end. It is that the disordered love of self is the very material the earthly city is made of, from the first brick. Decadence is not a late corruption of the thing. It is the thing, finally showing its face.

This is the same lie I write about every week, the one that whispers your life is your own, just grown to the size of a nation. The cult of self does not only hollow out a man. It hollows out a civilization, on a clock, and the clock reads two hundred and fifty years.

Realize the Truth

Once you see that the thing eating the country is the same thing that eats the man, you cannot unsee it. The restlessness in your own chest and the brittleness in the headlines are not two problems. They are one problem at two different altitudes.

And this is the exact point where most men break the wrong way. They look at a clock that big and they do one of two things. They despair, deciding nothing they do matters against a tide that size. Or they get angry and pour the one life they have into trying to grab a national steering wheel that was never in their hands to begin with.

Both are traps. Both are the cult of self wearing a patriotic costume.

Because here is the thing the morning after makes clear. You were never asked to save the empire. No man on Glubb’s list of eleven was. The question in front of you was never whether you could reverse a three-thousand-year pattern by Friday. The question was, and still is, much smaller and much heavier than that. What are you building, in the years you actually have, in the few square feet you actually govern?

What Actually Survives the Fall

Look back across every one of those collapses and notice what is still standing in the rubble: The households. The families that kept the faith when the capital lost it. The fathers who taught their sons to read by candlelight while the libraries burned. The monasteries that copied the books through the dark centuries and handed civilization forward to people they would never meet. Rome fell. The Church that Rome could not kill is still here, and you can find it open this Sunday morning.

Noah did not deliver a speech to his generation. He did not run for office in a world that was about to drown. He built. Quietly, for a long time, while the culture laughed, he built the thing that would carry what mattered across the flood. That is the patriarch’s whole vocation in a single image. To build the ark.

And building the ark has an order to it, and the order is the entire point. You cannot hand your children a faith you do not have. You cannot bring peace to your community out of a home that is at war. You cannot order a nation while your own interior life is chaos. It goes from the inside out, or it does not go at all. Yourself first. Then the people across your own table. Then the church and the town and the work that God set in front of you. Then, and only then, anything larger.

I wrote a whole book working this out, because I needed the structure before I could live it. Five things have to be tended at every one of those levels, the same five, ordered outward. Your purpose. Your skill. Your relationships. Your environment. Your resources. Get them right in yourself and you can build them in your home. Get them right in your home and you can build them in your street. The decadence Glubb described is what you get when a people chases all five at the scale of an empire while every one of them rots at the scale of a man.

Right things, rightly ordered, from the inside out.

This is the battle cry, the forward march. Augustine told the very people he was warning to go on and seek the welfare of the city they lived in, to love it rightly, to pray for it, to build it up, just never to mistake it for home.

A man who has his own house in order is the only kind of man a community can actually be built from. The patriarch is the only raw material a nation worth having was ever made of.

The Line, and the Work

So draw the line here, on the day after.

You cannot stop the clock. Let that go. It is not your clock, and it never was. What you can do is refuse to spend your one and only life as a passive citizen of the dying city, waiting on a capital to hand you a meaning it has never once produced for anyone.

Build the ark instead. This week, not someday.

Worship, do not merely attend. Walk in on a Sunday morning and mean it.

Sit your children down and tell them, in plain words, what this family is actually for, because if you do not define it the spectacle will define it for them.

Put your money to work in things that will still be working a hundred years from now, instead of feeding it back into the machine that is throwing the party. Tend the five things, in yourself first, then in the people you can reach by name.

The empire will do what every empire on the list has done. That story is not yours to write. The household is. The household always has been. A household built on the love of God instead of the love of self does not run on anyone’s two-hundred-and-fifty-year clock.

The fireworks were fine. They were never the point.

A fisherman who denied Christ to a servant girl while warming his hands at someone else’s fire.

And a scholar who held the coats at a stoning, then went looking for more Christians to drag out of their homes and slaughter.

These are the two pillars. Peter and Paul. The Church puts them on the same feast day, June 29, and has for roughly seventeen hundred years.

This is intentional; it is a message. If you are a man who has been sitting on the truth, keeping your faith politely to yourself, waiting until you are more qualified to open your mouth, the message is aimed directly at you.

The Cave

Four hundred years before Christ, Plato told a story about prisoners chained in a cave. All they have ever seen are shadows thrown on a wall by a fire behind them. The shadows are their entire reality. They name them, study them, build their lives around them.

Then one prisoner is dragged out into the sunlight.

Here is the detail most people forget. The light does not enlighten him gently. It blinds him. His eyes burn. He stumbles. Everything he was certain of dissolves before he can see what is actually there.

Keep that image. Because the two men we honor on June 29 lived it. Literally.

The Most Certain Man in the Cave

Saul of Tarsus was the opposite of confused. He was the best student of his generation, trained at the feet of the great Gamaliel, zealous beyond his peers, absolutely certain he could see clearly. He was an expert in the shadows. He could name every one of them.

And he was so certain that he stood guard over the coats while a mob crushed Stephen with stones. By his own confession, “I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death” (Acts 22:20). Then he obtained letters and set out for Damascus, “breathing out murderous threats” (Acts 9:1).

On that road, the Light found him

A light from heaven that knocked him to the ground and took his sight. For three days the most certain man in the cave was blind, eating nothing, learning what the prisoner in Plato’s story learned: the first thing real light does to a man who has lived in shadows is undo him.

When Ananias laid hands on him, Scripture records the strangest, most precise detail: “immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales” (Acts 9:18).

Scales. The residue of the cave, peeling away.

The Man the Cave Almost Took Back

Peter walked with the Light Himself for three years. He saw the lepers cleansed, and the dead raised. He confessed Christ with his own mouth.

And on the worst night in history, fear of man pulled him straight back into the dark. The Gospel of John notes exactly where he was standing when he denied his Lord: beside a charcoal fire, warming his hands among the servants of the men murdering his Friend (John 18:18).

Here is a detail: The Greek word for charcoal fire, anthrakia, appears exactly twice in the whole New Testament. Once at the fire of denial. And once on a beach after the Resurrection, where the risen Christ has built a second charcoal fire and is cooking breakfast (John 21:9).

Same smell in the nostrils. Same glow on the face. And beside that second fire, Christ asks him three times, once for each denial, “Do you love me?”

Christ did not erase Peter’s failure. He walked him back to the exact sensory scene of it and rewrote the ending.

If you have a fire you cannot stop returning to in your memory, a moment of cowardice that still warms your face with shame, understand what kind of God you are dealing with. He does not file your failures away. He builds a second fire.

Your Wall Is Made of Glass

Now look at your own cave.

The wall the shadows play on is in your pocket. It is in your hand before your feet hit the floor in the morning. The fire behind you, casting the shapes, is run by what I have named before in these pages: the cult of self, the modern lie that your life is your own, that your opinions are too costly to voice, that your job is to consume quietly and keep the peace.

The shadows are curated for you. Outrage you cannot act on. Luxuries you do not need. Versions of manhood with nothing underneath them. And the longest-running shadow of all: the suggestion that a serious man keeps his deepest convictions to himself.

It is working. A national survey by the Cato Institute found that 62 percent of Americans say the climate prevents them from saying things they actually believe (source).

Nearly two out of three men, chained in their seats, watching the wall, holding their tongues.

No man was made for a small story. And no man was made to whisper.

The Part of the Story Where They Kill You

Plato knew how his story ended. He said that if the freed prisoner went back down into the cave to tell the others, his eyes now ruined for the dark, the prisoners would mock him. And if he insisted on dragging them toward the light, they would kill him.

Peter and Paul both walked back down.

They walked into Rome. The loudest cave on earth. The center of the empire’s noise, appetite, and power. An old tradition says Peter was fleeing the city during Nero’s persecution when he met Christ on the road, the Via Appia, walking the other way. “Where are you going, Lord?” Peter asked. To Rome, came the answer, to be crucified again. Peter turned around.

The cave did exactly what Plato predicted. Tradition holds that Peter was crucified, asking to be hung head-down because he was unworthy to die as his Lord did, and that Paul, a Roman citizen, was beheaded on the road out of the city. Same city. Same persecution. Honored on the same day ever since.

St. Augustine preached that though they suffered on different days, the two were as one, and St. John Chrysostom said he loved Rome above all its splendor for one reason: it held the bodies of Peter and Paul.

A coward and a killer. Dragged into the light, blinded, restored, and sent back down the tunnel. Neither one freed himself. Neither one stayed safe. And the Church stands on them still.

Why This Publication Exists

Now the confession.

One year ago (2025), the feast of Saints Peter and Paul fell on a Sunday. I was standing in the nave of my parish when my priest, Fr. Samuel, gave a homily about speaking up. I do not remember every word. I remember the weight. I remember knowing, the way you know when something is aimed at you, that I had been warming my hands at a comfortable fire for a long time, and that the prompt was simple: stand up, speak up, and be counted.

I went home and started writing the posts you find in this publication that day. It took me many months to work up the nerve to hit publish. But everything you have read in these pages exists because two martyrs had a feast day, and a priest took it seriously, and one man in the congregation stopped pretending he had nothing to say.

This publication is my walk back down the tunnel. I am writing to you a few steps ahead in the dark, holding a candle, telling you the sun is real because it burned me too.

The Council Is Waiting

After Pentecost, Peter and John were arrested and hauled before the council, the same council that had condemned Christ. The rulers looked at these two fishermen and Scripture says they “perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men” and marveled, because one thing was undeniable: “they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).

The council ordered them to be silent. Peter, the coward of the charcoal fire, answered for both of them: “we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20).

The world looks for credentials, eloquence, impressive men with finished character arcs. Notice what qualified these “unlearned and ignorant men,” Peter and John. Proximity to the Light. That is the entire qualification, and you can have it too.

Your council is probably not a tribunal out for your murder. Glory to God. Mostly likely, it is a dinner table where your children have never heard you pray out loud. A break room where everyone assumes you think what the shadows think. A feed where you repost what is safe and bury what is true. A friend who is dying quietly in the dark, waiting for one man he respects to say the unfashionable thing.

Stay silent, and here is what it costs. The question that has been haunting you in the quiet, whether any of this will matter when you are gone, will be answered. And the answer will be no.

Speak, build, and bear witness, and the answer changes. You will leave behind something death cannot take. Two men in Rome proved that the grave cannot hold a story like that. We are still saying their names two thousand years later, on the same day, every year.

June 29

The Church does not walk into this feast casually. For weeks before it, the Apostles’ Fast strips things away, quieting the noise so the message can land.

So here is the challenge:

On June 29, find the place where you have been silent and say the true thing. Pray out loud at your table. Tell one man what Christ has actually done for you. Put your name on what you believe. Do it badly if you must. Peter preached with a denial in his past and Paul preached with blood on his hands, and the Light was strong enough to carry both.

You were made for more than a small story.

The coward became the rock.

The killer became the apostle.

The cave is still full of men you know.

Walk back down.

You work. You love. You learn. And one day you will die, and the story you are currently living will end at your funeral. Two or three paragraphs, read by a man who may not have known you well, to a room of people already thinking about lunch.

That sense you carry in the quiet, the weight of a life that is not adding up and no name for why, is accurate perception. Something really has been taken from you, and the thief has been standing in your living room so long you stopped seeing him.

There is an enemy. He preaches that your life is your own. He tells you exactly what you want to hear, which is how you know he is lying.

He has infiltrated nearly everything. Your favorite news program assumes him. The ads in your feed promote him. The entertainment is built on him. And most of the churches you have known, hear me carefully, most of the churches, have been quietly running his sermons under a Christian letterhead for generations.

Most men joined this cult years ago. They never noticed, because nobody ever notices joining. The poison was already in the room when you were born, and you have been breathing it ever since.

The Cult of Self

That is the enemy’s name. The cult of self. The modern lie that your life is your own.

This is the unspoken philosophy behind the world. It has algorithms. It has core tenets, usually disguised as virtues, and you will recognize every one of them:

Individual Sovereignty. You are accountable to nothing above your own judgment. “Live your truth.” “You don’t owe anyone anything.” Authority, tradition, obedience, these are framed as threats to the self rather than the trellis the self was meant to grow on. The sovereign individual bows to nothing, which is another way of saying he is alone.

Self-Improvement. The new gospel of optimization, which begins by promising what you could become, for a price. The global self-improvement industry was worth roughly $46 billion in 2024 and is projected to nearly double within a decade. Think about what that number requires. An industry that size only grows if the project never finishes. You are the product that must stay broken.

Self-Care as Precedent. Rest is good. Sabbath is commanded. But the cult inverted the order. Your peace now comes before your post. Obligations to wife, children, parents, parish, all of it renegotiable the moment it costs you comfort. “You can’t pour from an empty cup” has quietly replaced “greater love hath no man than this.”

Self-Creation. The deepest tenet and the oldest. You are raw material, and the sculptor is you. Identity as a craft project. Meaning as a build-your-own. No story you did not author can bind you.

Read those four again. Do any of them sound evil? And that is the point. The cult of self recruits with virtue language and a comfortable chair.

The Oldest Sermon Ever Preached

Here is what the cult does not want you to know: it is not new. It is not even modern. It is the original heresy, and the first sermon was preached in a garden.

“You will be like God” (Genesis 3:5). Self-sovereignty, self-creation, self-actualization, the whole catechism in one sentence from a serpent. Every tenet above is a remix.

The Apostle Paul saw our century coming and named it without flinching: “In the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves” (2 Timothy 3:1-2). The Greek word is philautoi. Self-lovers. Paul did not say men would become atheists. He said they would have “a form of godliness” while “denying the power thereof,” and he told Timothy to turn away from them. A form of godliness, hollowed out and worn like a costume. Hold that phrase. We will need it when we get to the churches.

And the Fathers diagnosed the disease at its root. Self-love is the mother of all the passions. Every sin you have ever committed grew from that one root. Not lust first, not greed first, not anger first. Self-love first, and the rest are its children.

The cult of self is a war that is older than your civilization, and you were born behind enemy lines.

How the Cult Preaches Now

The doctrine is the same as Eden. Only the delivery system has changed, improved.

You need to be able to recognize the enemy:

The Guru Pulpit

One of the most-followed business voices on the internet, a man with millions of disciples, posted a meditation on death that traveled far and wide. The gist: at your funeral, people will argue over your stuff, talk about the food, summarize you in a paragraph or two, and drive home thinking about their to-do lists. Most people you know will not even come. You are going to die and be forgotten in weeks.

His conclusion, the moral of the whole sermon: “Do what you want.”

Millions of men nodded along and called it wisdom. This is the cult of self performing its own funeral liturgy.

Yes, you will die.
Yes, the world will move on.
And that is precisely why “do what you want” is the advice of a dead man to dying men.

Selfish living is exactly what leaves a man forgotten. A man who plants himself in others, who builds a household, disciples his children, and gives himself away, does not end at his funeral. He echoes.

The guru economy cannot sell you that, because it costs nothing they stock.

The Mirror Maze

Social media is a hall of mirrors with a slot machine bolted to every frame. Validation in, attention out, repeat until dead.

At current usage, an American man will spend more than 18 years of his adult life staring at the internet. Eighteen years. Set that against your actual obligations. Eighteen years is enough time to raise a son from birth to manhood. It is enough to learn Greek, read every Father of the Church, and build a business that feeds your grandchildren. The cult took those years one fifteen-second scroll at a time, and it called the theft “connection.”

I am not preaching from the mountaintop here. I will look down some evenings and realize I have been scrolling X for an hour I never agreed to give. More on what I am doing about it below.

The Therapeutic Gospel

Then there is the new priesthood, the one that speaks in clinical tongues. Ninety-five percent of Americans now encounter “therapy speak” in daily life, and the same research found respondents admitting these terms get weaponized in conflicts and used as cover for bad behavior.

Real trauma exists. Real mental illness exists, and a man who needs help should get it. But the cult’s move is more subtle: it takes the language of healing and uses it to pathologize a normal life. Hardship becomes trauma. Obligation becomes toxicity. Your mother calling too often becomes a boundary violation. Discomfort of any kind becomes a clinical event requiring accommodation rather than a Tuesday requiring courage.

The old vocabulary, sin, duty, repentance, sacrifice, forgiveness, treated you as fully human: a soul with a will, capable of evil and therefore capable of turning. The Fathers called the Church a hospital and Christ the Physician, and in that hospital the diagnosis is honest, the treatment costs you something, and there is a cure.

The therapeutic culture runs a different kind of facility. No cure is on offer, only management. You are a diagnose, symptoms named, blame assigned, appointments forever. The cult wants you chronic.

“Protecting My Peace”

Watch where the therapeutic gospel leads. It leads to the family.

Sociologists Paul Amato and Alan Booth spent decades studying divorce, and their finding should stop you cold: only about a third of divorces end high-conflict marriages. The rest dissolve marriages without abuse, without betrayal, without serious conflict, and their research found it is precisely the children of those divorces who fare worst, because the children of a low-conflict home lose their entire world without ever seeing a reason. The parents call it growth. The children experience it as an earthquake with no fault line.

This is what moral evasion looks like with a wellness filter on it. Vows renegotiated, parents cut off, children’s stability liquidated, and all of it narrated in the first person as self-care. “I had to protect my peace.” The cult of self has taught a generation of men to describe abandonment in the vocabulary of health.

The Elite Seminary

Who teaches the teachers?

Hollywood, the tech platforms, and increasingly the academy run a finishing school for exactly one personality type. Charm without warmth. Manipulation as strategy. Self-promotion as résumé.

We platform it, fund it, and give it the keynote.

And the formation works. A meta-analysis of nearly fifty years of data found narcissism scores among American college students rose 30 percent between 1982 and 2006, with almost two-thirds of recent students scoring above the old average.

The culture trains for self-worship, one cohort at a time, while ordinary men internalized the curriculum and trust, family stability, and social cohesion paid the bill.

The machine profits immensely. The men inside it do not.

The Infiltrated Church

Now the hardest one. The one that should make you angriest, because it happened on consecrated ground.

Two decades ago, sociologist Christian Smith led the largest study ever conducted on the religious lives of American young people. What he found in the churches was not Christianity. He had to invent a new name for it: Moralistic Therapeutic Deism. Its creed: God wants you to be nice. The central goal of life is to be happy and feel good about yourself. God does not need to be involved except when you have a problem. Good people go to heaven.

And here is the finding that should keep pastors awake: researchers concluded the young people had not misunderstood their churches. They had understood them perfectly. The churches were teaching exactly this. A form of godliness. The power denied.

How did it happen? It happened wherever Christianity was reduced to a private decision and a personal feeling.

Strip away the altar, and worship becomes a concert.
Strip away the fast, and discipleship becomes a podcast.
Strip away confession, and repentance becomes self-talk.

Strip away four thousand years of received practice, and every man becomes his own pope, his own liturgist, his own magisterium, which is to say, the self ascends the throne and the building keeps the cross on the wall as branding.

Today, the biggest “churches” don’t even require attendance.

You can just get on your phone and stream the “worship” service, hear the “sermon,” pray the “prayer,” and your ticket to heaven is punched — especially if you click like and subscribe.

I am not aiming this at the man in the pew. He is the victim, not the architect. He was handed a map, the same as you, and he is following it sincerely toward a destination it does not reach.

A faith that asks nothing of your body, your calendar, your appetite, or your will is not a church it is a chapel for the cult of self.

This is devastation on the spiritual and familial front, and the root of all of it is pride.

The self enthroned.

Once you see it, you will see it everywhere, in the guru’s funeral post, in the mirror maze, in the therapy vocabulary, in the divorce filings, in the praise band singing about how God makes me feel.

This the beginning of your way out.

The Way Out: Milk Before Meat

I have written before about embodied faith, faith that lives in your hands and your calendar, not just your head. Scripture calls new believers infants who need “milk, and not strong meat” (Hebrews 5:12).

I am going to hand you three baby steps. Small, embodied, non-negotiable. They will cost you. They are supposed to.

1. Find a Church That Embodies Christ

Here is the test, and it is brutally simple: does the church ask anything of your body? Is there an altar at the center, or a screen? Is there a fast on the calendar? Is there a liturgy older than your country, or a setlist newer than your truck? Do you leave having worshipped, or having attended?

A church that exists to meet your preferences, affirm your feelings, and send you home comfortable is, whatever the sign says, a franchise of the cult of self.

Belief that never reaches the body is the cult’s favorite kind, because it changes nothing.

The Church that the Apostles planted had sacraments, fasts, kneeling, incense, confession, and obedience, and it produced martyrs. Find the worship that would still make sense in the catacombs. Stand in it once. Just once, as a baby step. A vespers service on a Saturday evening costs you ninety minutes. See what your body learns there that your mind has been unable to hear.

2. Fast From the Media That Forms You

You become what you give your attention too. So guard your attention like your soul depends on it.

The baby step: aim for under one hour a day of secular media, total. News, feeds, streaming, all of it, one hour. Then two days a week, fast from media altogether. If you are Orthodox, you already know the days: Wednesday and Friday, the same days the Church has fasted since the first century. Attach your media fast to the Church’s fast and let an ancient rhythm carry you, because your willpower alone will not.

Christian media can fill some of the silence, Scripture, the lives of the saints, something like Patristic Nectar, but be careful even here. The cult can wear a fish symbol. Content about God is not communion with God, and a man can binge sermons the same way he binges anything else.

I will be honest with you: I miss these targets myself. The hour on X that I never agreed to give still happens. A tool that has actually helped me is minimalist phone, which strips the slot machine out of the device and makes every app open a decision instead of a reflex. Use it or something like it. You are not strong enough to white-knuckle a machine that a thousand engineers built to defeat you. Neither am I. Change the battlefield.

3. Pray the Prayers You Did Not Write

Here is the trap waiting at the end of the road: a man flees the cult of self and then prays self-centered prayers, an unstructured monologue of requests, vibes, and self-affirmation.

So humble yourself and pray like the Body of Christ has always prayed.

Pray the Trisagion.

Pray the Our Father, slowly, the prayer the Lord Himself put in your mouth.

Pray the Psalms, the prayer book of Christ and every saint who followed Him.

Pray with the saints, in the company of the men and women who finished this race, instead of alone in the mirror maze of your own phrasing.

There is a reason this is the step the cult resists hardest. Received prayer is obedience in its purest form. You submit to it, and in submitting, the self finally comes down off the throne, and the room gets quiet enough to hear Someone else.

The Line

You were made for something the cult of self has spent your whole life hiding from you: to become, by grace, what God is by nature.

The Fathers called it theosis. No man was made for less, including you.

The enemy is in your midst. He has been preaching to you through every screen and most of the pulpits you have ever sat under. Today you learned his name.

Now pick your step. The vespers service. The Wednesday fast. The Psalms tonight instead of the scroll.

Milk first. Then meat. Then war.

Five hundred companies in the index.

Ten of them hold forty percent of the weight.

Nearly all of the ten are riding the same story, the same two letters, the same promise that has been printed on every magazine cover and shouted from every cable desk for two years straight.

Torsten Sløk, the chief economist at Apollo, has a name for what this is. He calls it a single point of failure.

He is one of several serious voices, alongside Michael Burry and the Man Group, pointing at the same thing.

The index your 401(k) tracks, the one your advisor told you was diversified, is no longer diversified in any meaningful sense. It is a concentrated bet on a handful of firms and one narrative. And Sløk’s own firm notes that if a few more of these private giants list this year, that concentration could climb toward half the entire index.

You did what you were told.
You bought the index fund.
You set it and forgot it.

And while you were not looking, the men who manage the money quietly turned your retirement into a wager on a single story, “AI.”

However, I don’t want to write an article about that story. This is an article about you.

A Word Before the Teardown

I am not a guru, and I am not here to tell you to sell everything and bury cash in the yard. I have spent decades as a chief financial officer, building organizations that had to actually work, signing the front of paychecks and not just the back. I know how to read a balance sheet, and I know how to build things that do not fall over.

I will also tell you plainly: I use these tools every day. The large language models, the ones the headlines insist on calling something grander, are genuinely useful. They check my grammar. They organize my research. They turn what I say into what I type. They are calculators for words, and a good calculator is a gift.

The tools are real. The hype is the problem. And the hype has crawled out of the product and into your portfolio.

The Teardown

1. The Word Is Doing Work the Word Cannot Do

The term “AI” gets thrown around as though a mind has been born in a server farm. It has not. What exists is a class of remarkable instruments, useful the way a printing press was useful, the way a spreadsheet was useful. Instruments do not justify forty percent of a nation’s invested wealth. Stories do. And a story is exactly what is being sold to you, dressed in the language of inevitability so you will not think to ask the boring questions a steward is supposed to ask.

2. The Concentration Is the Crisis

Sløk’s point is not that these companies are bad. Some are extraordinary. His point is structural. When ten names carry forty percent of the index, the index stops protecting you. The whole reason a man buys broadly is so that no single failure can take his house down with it. That protection has quietly evaporated, and almost no one told the men holding the funds. A sharp drop in the leaders, Apollo warns, could erase years of gains in weeks.

3. The Velocity Should Make You Sober, Not Excited

Consider one company in this race. It raised money at a valuation near nine hundred sixty-five billion dollars, then filed to go public days later. I will be honest with you, some of the tools I praised a moment ago come from that very company, so I have no interest in dressing this up or tearing it down unfairly. I am not predicting its failure. I am pointing at the speed.

The culture has built a machine that can manufacture a near-trillion-dollar valuation faster than a young couple can save a down payment on a starter home. Ask yourself, soberly, what kind of thing appreciates that fast, and whether the thing you are building for your children is supposed to keep pace with it.

4. The Noise Is Engineered

The hype is pushed in your feeds.

The cable desk runs the ticker in red and green to keep your pulse up.

None of this is built to make you wise. It is built to make you trade, because your trading is how they eat.

The financial noise is the same machine as every other machine pulling at a modern man, dressed in a suit and given a stock symbol.

It wants your attention and your hard-earned dollars, and it does not pray for you.

The Spiritual Cost

There is a parable about a man exactly like the one the market is counting on. His land produced abundantly, and he had a problem most men would envy: too much to store. So he made a plan. He would tear down his barns and build bigger ones, and then he would say to his soul, take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.

“But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?” (Luke 12:20)

Don’t get confused and think he was condemned for being rich. He was condemned for building his whole security on a harvest, and forgetting that the harvest was never the point. The market is asking you to be that man. To build your barns on one season’s narrative and call it a foundation.

Our Lord finished the lesson with the verse that should be carved over every brokerage door. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Luke 12:34) I have spent a career watching men store their treasure in things the grave empties, and watched their hearts go right into the vault with it.

The Pivot You Cannot Forget

Here is the thing you will not be able to forget once you have read it.

The index was never diversification. It was the feeling of diversification, and the feeling lasted exactly as long as the story did. The moment you understand that forty percent of the market is one bet wearing the costume of five hundred, you cannot go back to pretending your retirement is safe because a man on television used the word passive.

And the deeper cut is this: The same culture that built this fragile tower is the culture that taught you to measure a man’s life the way it measures a stock. By its velocity. By how fast it appreciated. By the number at the top of the statement. That is the single point of failure that should actually scare you, because a life built on that metric fails the same way the index does. All at once, when the story breaks, with nothing underneath.

The Real Path in 7 Small Steps

I wrote Five Principles because men kept asking me how to think about money without losing their souls to it. The details will follow, because it is the answer to everything above.

None of this is a recommendation to buy or sell any particular thing. It is the framework a steward thinks with taken from deep study of the greatest financial minds of all time.

What you do inside this advice is between you, your wife, and a fiduciary who is legally bound to you and not to a sales desk.

#1 Wealth Is Not Money

Money is a tool. Wealth is what is left when the tool is gone: a marriage that held, children who can stand, a faith that does not depend on the market being green.

Practically, this means you stop measuring yourself by the number at the top of the brokerage statement and start measuring by a harder question. If my income stopped tomorrow, how long could my household stand? It’s a question about time, your time, your life. How long you last. Most men have never run that number, because the number is frightening. Run it anyway.

A man who knows exactly how many months his family can survive a layoff is wealthier, in every way that matters, than a man with a bigger balance who has never asked.

#2 Build the Wall Before You Build the Tower

Before a single dollar goes into any market, you need a wall around your household. The Fed’s own survey found that thirty-seven percent of American adults could not cover a four-hundred-dollar emergency with cash.

More than a third of this country is one transmission, one ER visit, one broken furnace away from a credit card they cannot pay off.

This is a survival problem, and you solve it first, in this order.

1. A starter emergency fund. A couple thousand in a boring savings account you do not touch. A circuit breaker, so the next minor disaster does not become debt.

2. Kill the consumer debt. Every card, every note, one at a time, with everything you can throw at it. Dave Ramesy recommends smallest to largest; it’s sound advice.

   Debt is the one position guaranteed to compound against you. You will never out-invest a credit card charging you twenty-four percent. Pay it off and you have earned a guaranteed twenty-four percent return, which no fund on earth can promise you.

3. Three to six months of real expenses, in cash, untouched. This is the moat. This is the thing that lets you keep your head when the market is on fire and every other man is selling at the bottom to make rent.

The men who get rich in a crash are simply the men who did not have to sell during one.

Boring? Completely. Boring is the point. The boring wall is what makes the interesting building possible.

#3 Stewardship Is Taught Generationally

Seventy percent of family wealth is gone by the second generation, ninety percent by the third. Because the formation of the family was too small, not the balance you left them. Realize you are not building a balance for your children. You are building men and women who know what to do with one.

In this way, whether you leave nothing financial behind or $5,000 or $5,000,000 your children will know what to do with it.

The practical work is not hiding the money in a trust and hoping. It is bringing your children inside the machine while they are young. Let them watch you say no to something you could afford. Let them see the giving happen before the spending. Give a teenager a small sum and the dignity of losing some of it on a bad decision while the stakes are survivable, because a man who first loses money at fifty with his retirement on the line is a man who was never taught.

The inheritance that lasts is because one has the competence to handle it.

#4 Financial Success Only Happens on Purpose

No man drifts into a legacy. The market drifts. You must not.

This is where you write the boring document almost no household has: a plan on paper. What comes in, what goes out, what gets stored, what gets given, decided in advance and in writing, when you are calm, so that the decision is already made before the salesman, the screen, or the panic ever reaches you.

The famous investor, Benjamin Graham, drew the line between an investor and a speculator right here.

The investor decides his rules in the cold light of reason and follows them when his blood is up. The speculator reacts to the screen. One of those men builds a legacy. The other funds the casino. The difference is not intelligence or income. It is whether the decision was made on purpose, ahead of time, or in the heat of a market doing what markets do.

#5 Debt Is Dangerous

It is the leash the modern economy hands you and calls a tool. A man who owes is a man who can be moved.

Here is the rule a steward lives by: the only acceptable debt is debt that cannot bankrupt you and that is buying something which will still exist when the note is paid.

A modest mortgage on a home you can afford even if your income drops, perhaps.

The car loan you signed to feel successful, the cards you carry to fund a life you have not yet earned, the line of credit that lets you skip the discipline of waiting, those are not tools. Those are how the system turns a free man into a renter of his own life.

The philosopher Nassim Taleb’s whole warning fits in one line: a man who is leveraged has handed someone else the timing of his ruin.

The unleveraged man may grow slower, but he cannot be forced to sell at the bottom, cannot be margin-called the week he loses his job, cannot be wiped out by a single bad season. He is harder to kill. In a fragile economy, that is the entire game.

#6 Invest Broadly, and Read the Room

When the market is greedy, be careful. When the market is crashing, be aggressive. Right now the market is greedy, and it is greedy about one thing. A steward notices that.

Broadly means broadly. Not the index pretending to be five hundred companies while ten of them carry forty percent of the weight. Truly broad ownership reaches past the story the whole country is buying at once: smaller companies, foreign companies, boring companies that make boring things people will still need when the narrative breaks, and yes, the productive assets and hard things that do not depend on any single quarter’s hype.

You do not buy because the price is rising and the story is exciting. You buy a sound thing for less than it is worth, so that even if you are wrong, you are protected. This is Graham’s famous margin of safety, buy for less than it’s worth.

The crowd does the opposite. It pays the most for the story exactly when the story is loudest, which is exactly when the margin of safety is gone, or inverse. When everyone you know is certain about the same two letters, that is not the time to follow. That is the time a steward gets careful.

#7 Invest in What Will Outlast You

Find the things that compounds longest.

This is Taleb’s deepest point: survival comes first, because you cannot compound if you are wiped out. A return of forty percent followed by a total loss is not a forty percent gain. It is a zero. The man who never blows up, who keeps a wall of cash, who refuses leverage, who owns broadly and patiently, will quietly pass the man chasing the hot thing, because the hot man eventually meets the season he will not survive.

Slow and unkillable beats fast and fragile over a lifetime, every single time.

But the truest holdings on this list never traded on any exchange. A child discipled. A wife known. A faith handed down intact. A church funded. A name that means something at the graveside. These are the only positions the grave cannot mark down, and they compound in the one account that does not close when your heart stops.

The Line in the Sand

The men managing the index made their bet. You do not have to make the same one with your one short life.

Build broadly with your money, soberly, like a man who has read the warnings. But build your self on the only foundation that has never had a bad quarter in two thousand years. One of these will be required of you, suddenly, on a night you did not schedule. The other will still be standing.

The market built a single point of failure. A steward builds something that cannot fail all at once, because it was never resting on a story to begin with.

That is how you build a legacy death cannot take.

You are alone for once. The house is quiet, or the truck is parked, or the noise has dropped for some accidental reason you did not plan. And into that opening comes a thought that does not belong to the day’s to-do list. It is older than that. It asks something underneath the schedule. Where is all of this actually going?

You do not answer it. You reach for the phone instead.

You have been trained. You have been taught, by every screen and every system around you, that the empty moment is a problem to be solved, a gap to be filled, a silence to be killed before it can say anything. So you kill it. And the question goes back under, where it waits.

Here is what I want you to consider. That question is not your enemy. It is the most honest part of you, and you have been running from it for years.

A Man Spends Seven Hours Looking, and None of It at His Own Life

The average American adult now spends a little over seven hours a day in front of a screen. Phone, television, tablet, the whole appetite. And the checking has become reflex more than choice. One study released in early 2025 found the average person checked their phone two hundred and five times a day.

Sit with the arithmetic for a second, because it tells the truth your feelings will dress up.

Seven hours a day looking outward. At other men’s vacations. At the argument you did not need to read. At the highlight reel of strangers. And in that same day, how many minutes did you spend looking inward, at the one life that is actually yours to answer for?

For most men the honest number is zero. We will give seven hours to everyone else’s life and not seven minutes to our own. We will study the news, the scores, the markets, the feeds, and never once study the soul that has to carry all of it.

This is by design. A man who never stops moving never has to ask where he is going. The motion is the anesthetic. As long as the next thing is always loading, the deep question never gets the silence it needs to be heard.

The Thing You Are Avoiding Is the Thing You Need

I have spent decades as a chief financial officer. I have built organizations that had to actually work, signed the front of payrolls, turned around numbers that make people nod across a conference table. I know how to fill a calendar until it has no room for silence. For a long stretch of my life, a full calendar was the proof I offered myself that I was a serious man.

And I would still lie awake some nights with the same question the quiet always brings. Is any of this going to matter when I am gone? Blessing only sharpened the question. The more I built, the louder it asked whether I was building the right things.

What I eventually understood is that the question was never the problem. My refusal to sit still long enough to face it was the problem. I had confused motion with meaning. I had treated reflection like a luxury I would get to once the season slowed down, and the season, as every honest man knows, never slows down on its own. You have to stop it. With your own two hands. On purpose.

The Oldest Men Knew the Newest Problem

If you think this is a modern crisis, you’re wrong. The men who saw it most clearly saw it sixteen hundred years ago, before a single screen existed, and what they said about it lands harder now than the day they said it.

The Fathers of the Church taught that the soul is formed in stillness, not in noise. They had a word for the inner quiet a man has to fight for. Hesychia. Not the stillness of an empty room. The stillness of a guarded heart, a mind that has stopped renting itself out to every passing impression.

Saint Isaac the Syrian, writing in the seventh century, said it in a sentence that should stop a modern man cold:

Read that again with your phone in your hand.

He is telling you that the noise you are drowning in belongs to a world that is passing away, and the silence you keep avoiding is a taste of the one that lasts forever. Every notification is the language of a kingdom that ends. The stillness you flinch from is the native tongue of the kingdom that does not.

And before any of the Fathers, the Psalmist gave the command plainly. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) Notice the order. The stillness comes first. The knowing comes after. A man who will not be still has cut himself off from the knowing. He has not lost his faith in a dramatic crisis. He has simply never been quiet long enough to hear it.

What Most Men Do Instead

Watch what happens to the average man when life hands him a clear schedule:

A long drive becomes a podcast.

A waiting room becomes a feed.

A morning before the kids wake becomes a scroll through other men’s outrage.

A whole vacation becomes a series of photographs he is too busy taking to actually live inside.

The clear schedule comes, and he paves every one of them, because the silence is exactly where the question lives, and he is afraid of the question.

The Christ-like pattern runs the other direction. The Lord Himself, in the busiest and most consequential stretch of His ministry, with crowds pressing in and needs in every direction, withdrew to lonely places to pray. Christ’s doing was governed by something deeper than the doing, and that something is only found in the quiet.

Here is the uncomfortable mirror. We tell ourselves we are too busy to stop and reflect. The truth is closer to the opposite. We stay busy so that we never have to. The fullness of the calendar is the strategy by which we avoid examining them.

The Twenty Minutes That Changes a Man

All you need is twenty minutes and the courage to not flinch.

Here is the practice, and it is older than any productivity system and slower than the world will tell you it should be. It also works.

Stop the motion. Put the phone in another room. Not on the table face-down. Another room. The leash has to be out of reach before the mind will quiet. If you own dogs, you understand this; they see the leash and they get excited.

Sit in the silence until it stops being uncomfortable. It will be uncomfortable at first. That discomfort is a sign something is working. It is the sign you have arrived at the door. The men who rush this never change. The discomfort is the door.

Pray before you plan. Not the performance prayer you say in front of people. The honest one. “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Say it badly. Then say it again and again. Say it until the noise in your heart and mind settles enough that you can hear your own life.

Then ask the first-things questions, and answer them honestly. Ask the questions about your soul, your wife, your children, your money, and the name you will leave behind. Where are these actually going? According to the evidence, not the mask you show everyone.

Most men have never once asked themselves these questions with clear eyes. They have run the calendar, paid the bills, shown up to work, answered the texts, provided, performed, produced, and let the years pass. And then somewhere in the middle of a man’s life, the quiet question arrives, and he has no practice for facing it, so he reaches for the phone, and the question goes back under.

Stop.

You do not have to live that way. You can build the practice of stilling the architecture of your life, the same way you built the practice of checking the phone two hundred times a day. One is the formation the world handed you. The other is the formation you choose.

What Waits on the Other Side of the Silence

A man who learns to stop and reflect becomes deliberate. The noise that was clouding his decisions clears. The money choices get sharper because the static is gone. He is actually present at his own dinner table, because he has practiced being present with himself. His prayer stops being a performance and starts being a meeting. His wife notices the difference before he says a word, because a man at peace with himself is a different man to live beside.

This is what stewardship looks like before it ever touches a dollar. Your attention, your time, your interior life, none of it is yours. All of it was loaned to you for a season, and you will give an account. The man who never stops to examine the account is hiding.

You were not made for a small story. You were not made to spend seven hours a day inside everyone else’s life and never twenty minutes inside your own.

The question you keep outrunning in the silence is there to call you home.

So stop the motion.

Sit in the silence.

Let it say what it has been trying to say for years.

The Father is waiting in the quiet. He always has been. You just have to stop long enough to hear Him.

You cannot name it. You cannot point to it on a calendar or in a bank statement or on the face of your wife when she looks up at you from across the kitchen. But it is there. A thorn in your mind. You can feel the man you were supposed to become standing on the other side of a wall of noise, and you cannot hear him anymore.

This is not an accident. The world wants you exactly here.

You Are Behind Enemy Lines

Your attention is the most valuable asset you own. More valuable than your paycheck. More valuable than your portfolio. More valuable, in eternal terms, than anything you can put in a bank.

The systems around you are built to take attention from you.

Entertainment is made to consume you.

Platforms are are engineered to keep you.

Debt is designed to own you.

The noise is not random background hum. It is a comforting lie, a fan in the window at night, white noise to keep you asleep while your one short life burns down.

Listen to the world long enough and you will become like the world. Passion driven. In debt. Anxious in your own home. Faithless. Wandering. And eventually, dead in every way that matters before your body ever stops moving.

You already know this. That nagging sense you have been carrying? That is your soul telling you the truth your scroll is trying to drown out.

The first step is naming it: you are in chains. The walls of the cave feel like home only because you have not seen the sun in so long.

Tools for the Path Ahead

I know the path ahead, a fall evening decades ago in Tennessee I walked out of a loud house. Pounding music. Substances. Vanity. The full menu of what the world serves up to a man who has thrown away everything good. I stepped outside into the silence of an autumn night, and for the first time in years, I could hear something other than noise. That moment of silence made me available for the path ahead.

The restlessness that drove me out that door is not rare.

Fifteen percent of men cannot name a single close friend.

Men die of despair, by their own hand, by the bottle, by the overdose, at more than 3X (three times) the rate of women. And when researchers went looking for the reason, they found the dying began when the churches started emptying.

The noise is the symptom. The problem is a life built on a foundation that ends at the grave, and a man who knows it underneath all the distractions.

What pulled me back was not my strength, and the tools I share are not my invention. The Fathers of the Church, the desert monks, the men who walked this road two thousand years before either of us was born, had a word for that restlessness.

It is a battle and they spent their lives learning how it is won.

Here is what they teach.

The Six Steps Out of the Cave

1. See the Chains

Before anything changes, you have to admit what is true. You are not free. The phone in your pocket is not a tool you use, it is a leash you wear. The next show, the next drink, the next purchase, the next opinion you needed to share, none of those were your idea. The environment chose them for you, and you obeyed.

Saint Paul names it plainly. “For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.” (Romans 7:19)

You are behind enemy lines. Stop pretending the territory is friendly.

2. Sort What You Can Control

The Stoics had this right and the Fathers carried it further. There are things in your hand and things outside of it.

You cannot control the algorithm. You can control whether the app is on your phone. You cannot control what your coworkers talk about. You can control whether you join in. You cannot control the culture. You can control your home. You cannot control what tomorrow brings. You can control the first thirty minutes after you wake up.

Stop wasting energy on what you cannot move. Spend it all on what you can.

3. Take Audacious Action

You will not drift out of the cave. No one accidentally builds a legacy. The light is on the other side of a decision, and the decision will feel violent because the chains have been on a long time.

Delete the apps. Cancel the subscription. Throw out the bottle. Tell your wife what is actually going on. Walk into the church early on Sunday when no one is there and stand in front of an icon and admit you do not know how to pray anymore.

Whatever the audacious move is for you, you already know what it is. It has been knocking on your chest for months.

“The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.” (Matthew 11:12)

4. Acquire the Spirit of Peace

This is the turn.

Everything before it is escape.

Everything after it is mission.

The Fathers called this hesychia. Stillness. Not the stillness of an empty room but the stillness of a guarded heart. Saint Seraphim of Sarov said it this way: “Acquire the spirit of peace, and thousands around you will be saved.”

You acquire it in four places:

• Body. Sleep. Move. Eat real food. Get sunlight. Put the weights down and pick the right ones up. A body that is jacked up on dopamine and fake food struggles to hear God.

• Mind. Read what lasts. Scripture. The Fathers. The great books that have already outlived a hundred trends. Stop renting your thoughts from people who do not know you and would not pray for you.

• Heart. Confess. To God first, to a priest if you have one, to your wife where it belongs. Resentment and shame are loud. They have to be brought into the light before silence is possible.

• Spirit. Pray. Even badly. The Jesus Prayer, fifty times, while you take out the trash. “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Do that for thirty days and tell me nothing has changed.

When the world is screaming, the signal is silence. Truth lives there and nowhere else.

5. Return to the Noise, Carrying Truth

You are called to be a man with a family, a job, a community, and a witness. Once you have found the silence, you go back into the world, but you do not return as the man who left.

You return as someone the noise cannot move.

Your phone rings and you decide whether to answer. The headline appears and you decide whether to care. Your kid asks you a question, and you are actually there to answer it. Your wife touches your arm, and you actually feel it. The money decisions get clearer because the noise that was clouding them is gone.

This is what stewardship looks like in real life. Time, attention, money, body, family, none of it is yours. All of it was loaned to you for a season. You give an account.

6. Pull the Next Man Out

You are not the first one out of the cave and you will not be the last. The men around you, your brother, your son, your coworker, the friend who texts at midnight, are still inside. The point of getting free was so you could go back for them.

How? You pull them out the way you were pulled out, with a quiet life that does not make sense to anyone living the loud one. They will ask, eventually. When they do, you will have an answer.

The Legacy on the Other Side

Here is what waits for you on the far side of silence.

A faith that is yours, not borrowed, and that holds when everything around you shakes.

A marriage where your wife knows the man she married is actually in the room.

Children who watched their father choose the harder road and learned that men are still capable of it.

Finances that serve your family instead of owning it.

A community that knows what you stand for because they have seen you stand.

A name that means something after you are gone.

None of that comes from working harder at the noise. All of it comes from learning to silence it.

The world will keep getting louder. That is the one thing you can count on. The question is not whether the noise will increase, the question is whether you will still be able to hear the truth when it does.

Do not fall behind. Do not wait until it is to late.

You are exactly where every man before you was when he made the same decision.

See your chains, sort out what you can control, take action, find the silence and acquire peace, carry the truth, and be a witness.

Florence is the most photographed city on earth and the most misunderstood.

The crowds line up for the Gates of Paradise. They tilt their phones at Brunelleschi’s dome. They argue about whether Michelangelo or Donatello carved the better David. They eat gelato in the shadow of Santa Maria del Fiore and believe they have seen something holy.

They have not.

The holy thing in Florence is in the dirt. It is under their feet. It is a girl.

The Tourist Sees What He is Told to See

I have climbed to the top of the great dome, looked out over Florence, and attended Mass under it.

Standing in the piazza and then under the dome, I was genuinely staggered by the architecture.

Brunelleschi solved a problem no one in Europe could solve for a hundred and forty years, and his dome (completed before the discovery of America) is proof that a single disciplined man can outwork an entire age.

The bronze panels of Ghiberti’s east doors are so beautiful that Michelangelo himself called them the Gates of Paradise and the name stuck.

Florence is the city of uomo universale, the universal man, the city that put the human person back at the center of the painting, the building, and the great poem by Dante.

This is what the tourist is sold.

This is what every guidebook frames.

This is what the city wants you to walk away with: Florence as the triumph of human achievement.

And it is a lie of omission.

Because before the dome, before the marble, before the Medici and the Renaissance and the long centuries of Italian glory, there was a small basilica on that same ground with a different name. Santa Reparata. It stood for nearly a thousand years. It was the cathedral of Florence from the late fourth century until 1296, when the city tore it down to build something bigger.

The new cathedral was so much larger that it swallowed the old one whole, like a nesting box. For seventy years they built the new walls around the old basilica. The Mass was celebrated inside Reparata’s church while the dome of her replacement rose above her. Then in 1379 they pulled her down for good and paved over her with marble.

She mostly vanished from the city’s memory.

In 1965, archaeologists started digging under the floor of the Duomo and found her again. Roman foundations. Early Christian mosaics. A Latin inscription commemorating Florence’s deliverance from the Ostrogoths in 406, which the city had attributed to her intercession. Bones. Tombs. The unmarked grave of Brunelleschi himself, the man whose dome buried her.

Today you can pay a small fee and descend a staircase. The noise of the piazza dies. You walk on a glass floor over fifteen hundred years of layered Christianity. Almost no one goes down there. The line for the dome above stretches around the block. The crypt below is silent.

Florence is built on a martyr’s church. The world walks over her without knowing her name.

Who She Was

Her story is the kind modern Christians have learned to discount.

She was, the Passio (passion, the martyrdom account) tells us, somewhere between eleven and twenty years old. The cathedral in Nice that holds her relics says fifteen. The Roman Martyrology says twelve. Split the difference and call her a girl who had not yet finished becoming a woman.

She lived in Caesarea Maritima on the coast of Palestine in the middle of the third century. The emperor Decius had issued an edict in 250 AD requiring every citizen of the empire to sacrifice to the Roman gods and produce a notarized certificate proving it.

Most people complied. Some bought forged certificates. A small remnant of Christians refused, and the empire began killing them in earnest.

Reparata was arrested. She was a child. She was given every possible chance to walk free.

All she had to do was throw a pinch of incense on the altar of a pagan god and say a few words.

She would not.

So they tortured her. They tried to burn her alive in a furnace, and a sudden rain put the fire out. They made her drink boiling pitch. Yet, she still would not deny Christ. Finally, they cut off her head with a sword.

The Passio says as she died a white dove rose from her body and flew up. The legend adds that her body was placed in a small boat and angels carried it across the Mediterranean to the bay now called the Baie des Anges, the Bay of Angels, at Nice.

The skeptic will tell you that none of this is historically reliable. Eusebius of Caesarea, the great chronicler of third-century martyrdoms in Palestine, never mentions her. Her name does not appear in the written record until the Venerable Bede includes her in his martyrology in the eighth century. The Catholic Church itself classifies her Passio as “unreliable legend.”

This is the part where the modern, well-catechized Christian feels free to dismiss her.

Do not.

What the Modern Mind Cannot See

The whole machinery of the modern mind is trained to look at a girl like Reparata and see nothing.

We have been taught to ask only three questions of any claim: Can it be verified? Can it be reproduced? Can it be monetized? Reparata fails all three. There is no archaeological dig that will produce her teeth. There is no laboratory that will reproduce her courage. There is no marketing department that can sell her death.

The same Florentines who could not bear the smallness of her basilica and tore it down for something grander, the same modern tourists who walk her city without descending into her crypt, the same Christianities who have quietly traded martyrs for motivational speakers, are all running the same operating system.

Training has taught us to value what is impressive over what is true.

The ancient Christian mindset works the opposite way.

The ancient Church did not receive the Passio of a virgin martyr as a courtroom transcript. The ancient Church received it as an icon written in words. The job of the Passio is to show the reader what a Christian under pressure actually looks like, so that when the reader’s turn came, the reader would know what to do.

A Passio is a map.

And the map of Reparata says this: a child, alone, with no advocates, no political cover, no platform, can stand against the entire Roman Empire and win. Not by escape, not by might, or by being impressive, but by dying for Truth.

That is not a story modernity knows how to read; it is why Reparata is buried under marble.

What Orthodoxy Still Sees

The Eastern Orthodox Church has a different mindset.

It is the same Church that buried its first three centuries of dead under the floors of its altars and then built the liturgy on top of them, so that every Divine Liturgy is still served on a small piece of a saints relic sewn into the cloth of the altar.

The Orthodox Church literally stands on its martyrs.

When the priest kisses the antimins before he begins, he is kissing the witness of someone who died for Christ.

There is no Eucharist without the bones.

The Orthodox mindset does not view a girl like Reparata as a historical embarrassment. It views her as a window.

A window into what the Apostle Peter meant when he wrote that we have been given “exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4).

A window into what Saint Athanasius meant when he wrote, “God became man, that man might become god” (On the Incarnation 54).

A window into what Saint Irenaeus meant in the late second century, just a few decades before Reparata’s death, when he wrote in Lyons:

“Gloria Dei vivens homo, vita autem hominis visio Dei.” The glory of God is a living man, and the life of man is the vision of God. (Against Heresies, Book IV, Chapter 20, Section 7)

This is a description of a martyr.

The Orthodox call this process theosis. Deification. The slow transformation of a human being into a partaker of God’s own nature, through union with Christ in the sacraments, through ascetic struggle, through suffering, through love.

Theosis is not the goal of advanced monks. It is the goal of every baptized person. And it is what we are looking at when we look at Saint Reparata.

The modern mind might think of her bravery, but brave people exist in every age and every religion.

St. Reparata is impressive because by the age of twelve, she had been so transformed by the grace of God that her created nature had begun to actually share in the uncreated nature of God. She was already, in the technical theological sense, partly divine. Not by her own essence, but by participation. The fire could not consume her because something in her was already on fire with something the empire could not touch.

The dove that rose from her body in the legend is not a literary flourish. It is the Passio author telling you what kind of creature she had become.

Modernity does not have a category for that.

The Plight of the Comfortable Christian

Look in the mirror with me.

You and I are not being asked to drink boiling pitch. We are being asked to put down our phones, fast on Wednesday, get our children to Liturgy, tell the truth at work, stay faithful to our wives, refuse to apostatize quietly under social pressure, and pray when no one is watching. None of it will get our heads cut off. Almost all of it makes us look weird.

And we still cannot do it.

Why? Because somewhere along the way the modern Christian quietly traded theosis for therapy. We stopped asking the ancient question: what does it look like for me to become fully human in Christ? We started asking the modern question: what does it look like for me to feel okay about myself?

Reparata at twelve was more human than most of us will be at sixty.

That sentence should sting.

The entire purpose of remembering the saints is to feel the gap. The saints are not on the wall of the church to make us feel inspired. They are on the wall to make us feel uncomfortable.

The diagnosis is supposed to land:

I am not as alive as that girl.

I am more impressive than her in every worldly measure and less alive than her in every eternal one.

Something has gone wrong in me.

Good. Now we can begin.

The Descent

The next time you find yourself in front of a beautiful building, a famous painting, an impressive cultural artifact, a city celebrated for its art and its history, ask yourself what is under it.

Almost every great Christian site in Europe was built on top of a martyr’s bones. The cathedrals of Italy and France and Spain are literal monuments to the witness of people who let themselves be killed rather than betray Christ.

The marble is the wrapping. The bones are the gift.

Then ask yourself the harder question. What am I building on top of? What dome am I constructing in my own life to cover over the small, dangerous, demanding thing God put under my feet? What am I paving over so I don’t have to look at it?

Because here is the governing principle. The glory of God is a living man, and a living man is one who has let himself be killed in all the ways that matter. Killed in his pride. Killed in his appetites. Killed in his cowardice. Killed in his hunger for the approval of people who do not pray for him. Killed in everything that is not yet partaking of the divine nature.

This is what Reparata is. This is what the Orthodox Church preserves. This is what the tourist on the piazza will never see, and this is what is offered to you, today, free of charge, in the ancient faith.

You do not have to die in a furnace. You only have to die in the place where God has put you. The death looks small. Most of it is just refusing to bow when everyone else is bowing.

But the result is the same as Reparata’s. A dove rises. A life becomes the vision of God. A girl in a third-century province outlasts an empire.

A Call to the Reader

If you are reading this and your faith feels like museum heritage, descend.

If you are reading this and your faith feels like a brand, descend.

If you are reading this and you are tired of inspirational Christianity and you can feel in your bones that there is something deeper than the dome, descend.

The crypt is open. The Saints are waiting. The same Spirit that took an unknown twelve-year-old girl in a forgotten Roman province and turned her into the eternal patroness of one of the most beautiful cities in human history is still moving.

He is not impressed with the marble. He is looking for living men and living women. He is looking for the dove that rises when you finally stop bowing to the things that demand a pinch of incense from you.

Look under the marble. You will encounter holiness. You will behold Christ. You will know yourself.

The heroic journey is the same as it has always been. The hero is the martyr. And the martyr is anyone, of any age, in any city, in any century, who has been so transformed by grace that his small, ordinary, hidden life has actually become the glory of God.

Saint Reparata, pray for us.

They’ll nod.

They’ll feel something stir.

Then the phone will buzz, and they’ll be gone. Back to the noise. Back to the comfortable half-life they’ve called a journey.

This article is not for those men.

This is for the man who can’t stop the question. The one who looks at everything he has built and suspects, deep in his chest, that he is still asleep. The man who has tried the easy path and found it does not lead anywhere worth going.

The hard path asks more than most men are willing to give. It asks you to see yourself clearly. It asks you to surrender what you cannot keep to gain what you cannot lose. It asks you to walk toward the fire instead of away from it.

Most men won’t do this.

A few will.

This is for them.

First Thing: Stop Pretending

There is a kind of man who calls himself a seeker but is actually hiding. He uses the language of openness to avoid the cost of commitment. He says he hasn’t found the truth yet because finding it would require him to change. He calls this being careful. What it actually is, is cowardice dressed in philosophical clothing.

Agnosticism gave a lot of men permission to delay the decision they already knew they needed to make. It let them live in the comfortable fiction that indecision is not itself a decision. But it is.

Every hour you spend not choosing is a choice. Plato knew it. The stoics knew it. The Church Fathers knew it. And somewhere under your defenses, you know it too.

The hard path starts not with a great act of faith, but with a small act of honesty. You look at yourself and you stop lying. You admit what you actually believe, what you actually fear, and what you are actually avoiding.

Dostoevsky wrote confession.

The Brothers Karamazov is a mirror, and most men smash mirrors rather than look into them.

The hard path demands you look.

Pride builds a costume. Humility meets the Physician.

The first milestone on this road is not intellectual. It is not a theological position arrived at through argument. It is a broken man in the dirt, asking for mercy, and meaning it.

That is where the path begins.

Second Thing: Seek the Truth Where It Lives

Modern men are drowning in information and starving for wisdom.

They carry the sum of human knowledge in their pockets and know less about how to live than their grandfathers did.

The philosopher Nassim Taleb wrote about what he called “Lindy.” A thing is Lindy because it’s continued existence is evidence of its durability. A newspaper lasts a day. A book that has survived fifty years will likely survive fifty more. A text that has endured a thousand years carries a different weight than this morning’s trending opinion. The older something is, the more Lindy, the less fragile, and more enduring truth.

The hard path requires you to think this way.

It requires you to go back to the source. The ancient philosophers understood things about the soul that your therapist’s training never covered. Epictetus, writing as a former slave, understood that the only path to freedom runs through the will aligned with truth, not through acquiring more options. Plato understood that the world of shadows on the cave wall is not all there is, and that the man who has seen the light has a responsibility to go back into the cave.

But even Plato knew he was pointing at something he could not fully name. He had the outline. He did not have the face.

The hard path takes you through the philosophers and then past them. Through Scripture, the living account of God pursuing men who kept running from Him. Revealing the Fathers of the Church, who held the deposit of the Apostles as a living inheritance. And backward through time until you arrive at something so ancient it has outlasted every empire, every argument, and every attempt to suppress it.

Truth is not merely what is.

Truth is who is.

The hard path is a pilgrimage.

You don’t simply think your way to the destination.

You walk toward it, and the walking changes you.

Third Thing: Let Your Body Follow

Here is where many men get lost.

Men want a faith that lives in their head and leaves their body alone. They want spiritual insights that do not require any practice, any obedience, any showing up somewhere with other people and doing the same things week after week for the rest of their lives.

This is another version of hiding.

God made you a body. He did not apologize for this. He became mankind Himself. The Incarnation is not a metaphor. The Son of God took flesh, walked on real ground, sweat, bled, ate fish after the Resurrection, and ascended in a body. If you have a theology that treats your body as a delivery system for your soul while your soul waits for the real spiritual experience, you have accepted a lie so old it has its own name: Gnosticism.

The Kingdom of God is physical. It is not only physical. But it is physical.

Baptism uses real water. The Eucharist is bread and wine. Confession is spoken to a real priest. You kneel. You bow. You fast. You stand for two hours in worship and your feet remind you that this is not entertainment; it is participation. These are not add-ons to a “personal relationship.” They are the Way Christ gave His Body to actually carry you into His life. You do not think your way into the Kingdom. You enter it as you enter every real place: with your body, through a door.

The hard path demands that you find the visible Church and enter it.

Find a real table, a real bishop, real sacraments, real discipline, real accountability, real community. A place you can walk into and be healed.

Christ assumed your whole humanity. That means your whole humanity can be healed. But you have to show up with all of it.

Fourth Thing: Let Yourself Be Healed

A broken bone, left alone, will sometimes fuse wrong. The man limps. He compensates. He builds his whole stride around the damage until he forgets there was ever another way to walk. Then the physician finds it, and the work of healing begins. And that work, setting the bone properly, hurts worse than the original break.

This is what the hard path does to a man. It heals him.

The self you surrender is the compensated version. The man shaped by pride, by unconfessed sin, by years of walking crooked and calling it strength. Confession finds the break and sets it. The Psalms prayed in the dark teach you to speak honestly. The Liturgy week after week realigns you, putting God at the center and slowly, painfully, freeing you from the exhausting work of keeping yourself there instead.

What emerges is the man God actually made.

That is the reality the hard path is moving toward. The restoration of true self. Christ does not come to replace you. He comes to heal what sin has broken in you, to complete what was always meant to be there. The fathers called this theosis, union with God by grace, not by becoming something other than human, but by becoming fully human at last, as God intended from the beginning.

This is the point.

Not to escape your humanity.

Not to transcend the body, the mind, the heart.

But to have all of it healed. From the inside out. By union with the God-Man who took on everything that is wrong with us so that everything He is could reach everything we are.

The bone set properly still aches for a season. But the man walks straight. And in time, he runs.

The Men Who Walk This Road

They are not the most impressive men in the room.

They are often the most honest. They carry their failures without hiding them and without being defined by them. They repent. They get back up. They come to the Cup as beggars.

They love their wives differently, more truly, than men who have not walked here.

They lead their households because they have learned to serve.

They understand that legacy is built by transmission: the faith, the character, the love handed down from one generation to the next.

They are not finished. They are not perfect. The hard path is not behind them; it is still under their feet. But they are walking it. And the walking has made them more alive, not less.

A Challenge for the Few Who Will Take It

Go back to the last question that genuinely unsettled you. The one that kept coming back. The one question you try to drown with distractions. The one that arrives in quiet moments and will not leave.

Follow it.

Follow it past the feel-good podcasts and the comfortable denominations telling you what you already believe.

Follow it to the oldest sources you can find.

Follow it past your assumptions.

Follow it until you arrive somewhere that costs you something.

Then stay.

The men who change, who actually become something other than what the world was shaping them to be, are the men who stay when it gets hard. Who confess when they would rather hide. Who receive when they would rather be self-sufficient. Who bow when they would rather stand apart.

Most men won’t do this.

The few who will are the ones history remembers. But more importantly, they are the ones their children remember. And their children’s children.

The point of Christianity is not to become an angel, go to heaven, and float around on clouds.

It is to become human. Fully human. As God intended.

The world says we should be spiritual, moral, and nice.

The Ancient Faith teaches we should be human, healed, whole, and alive in Christ.

If that does not shake you, you have not yet felt the weight of how badly our humanity is broken.

True Faith is Lived Faith

For years I built arguments. I studied scripture, history, the Church Fathers, and stacked true ideas one on top of the other like a man who thinks a tower of bricks is a house.

I was a successful CFO. A husband. A father of four. I could argue apologetics, hold massive spreadsheets together in my mind, and plan globe spanning family trips in the background. But inside the walls of my faith, something was hollow.

I had intellectual assent. I did not have a life.

My family needed a man who was being changed, not just informed. And I could not deliver what I did not have.

Have you ever felt this type of hunger? The answer for it will surprise you:

“The glory of God is a living man; and the life of man is the vision of God.” — St. Irenaeus

This sentence cracks something open in a man.

Your theology does not glorify God.

Your life glorifies Him.

A man standing upright. A woman loving fiercely. A child learning to see God in the bread on the table. These glorify God.

Theology is performing, and performances do not feed families.

What Went Wrong: Faith Without a Body

Here is the diagnosis. I couldn’t do faith without the Body. It requires the Body of Christ, the Church. It requires my body, surrendered and schooled.

I treated worship like a talk with background music.

Communion like a memory exercise.

Baptism like a photo opportunity.

I studied the Bible, argued for it, and still went home the same man who left.

That is what cowardly agnosticism does. It lets you hover above commitment. It lets you be spiritual without ever being sick enough to need a doctor.

Then the Ancient Faith cornered me. If the Son of God truly assumed our humanity, what He assumes, He heals. If He rose in a body, ascended in a body, then His Body on earth must be embodied too. A people you can find, join, obey, and in community be healed.

The people in Acts were a living organism with a table, with fathers, with suffering, with oil and water and bread and wine. These people still exist. I am part of them.

I had to stop explaining away the plain words of Jesus: “My flesh is true food. My blood is true drink. Unless you eat, you have no life in you” (John 6).

Either it is medicine, or it is theater.

I knew I was sick. And I knew theater was not going to save me.

We Came. We Confessed. We Were Baptized.

My wife and I came to the Orthodox Church during Lent. The same season we entered, Fr. Samuel gave a lecture series on Becoming Human. He taught that the entire project of Christianity is to become what God made us to be.

Sadly, modern forms of religion (modern Christianities, included) teach us about escaping our humanity. But we and this world are created good, and very good. Then sin entered, and we now need to be healed, to rediscover our divine image, and to fully participate with God as He intended.

St. Athanasius said it plainly: “The Son of God became man so that we might become partakers of divine life” (cf. 2 Pet. 1:4). This is diagnosis and treatment in one sentence.

We paid attention, felt the diagnosis, and wanted to be healed.

We were baptized into the Kingdom. We approached the Chalice together as beggars who found true bread. And for the first time in my adult life, I began to meet the man God actually made. A son, learning how to live.

My daughters were with me. My wife was beside me. And the Church, ancient and unmoved, received us like she had been waiting.

The Liturgy is a school for the soul, a hospital for sinners, a gymnasium for love.

Five Keys to Becoming Human

The following Lent of 2025 our priest asked me to give a talk about what my heart had learned in my journey. A talk about how I was learning to live. The hard-won battles. The keys I was finding to become human. Here is what I shared:

1. Be Humble

Fr. Stephen Freeman wrote, “Humility alone will stand before the judgment seat of God unashamed.” Adam’s fall was an anti-human project of trying to be like God without God. That project is still running in every boardroom, smartphone, man who thinks he can optimize his way into flourishing.

Repentance is the only action that actually restores life to the soul.

We must bring our weaknesses, soul sickness, and dying body before the throne of Christ and plead for mercy.

The prayer written on my heart is, “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me the sinner.”

Brothers, write it on yours.

2. Pay Attention

Nepsis. The Greek word for watchfulness, sobriety, guarding the heart.

Our priest says it before prayer, before blessing, before the most sacred moments of the Liturgy: “Pay attention.”

Watch the priest.

Watch the prayers.

Watch your thoughts.

Guard the heart from distraction, from the endless noise the world calls life.

In a culture engineered for distraction, attentiveness is rebellion. It is the first act of a man who refuses to be managed.

To become human, you must wake up to God’s presence in time, in bread, in breath, in the faces of your children, parents, neighbors, and yes, even your enemy.

3. Love One Another

You cannot practice humanity alone.

This is metaphysics, foundational before time, matter, and the creation of the world.

The Trinity is communion.

Salvation is communion.

The Church is communion.

God Himself is not a solitary being but a unity of Persons in love.

If He created us in His image, we are made for each other. Created to love one another!

Spiritual fatherhood, godparenthood, brotherhood in the faith are how God re-parents us into real personhood. These are tools of the Ancient Faith lived out in the modern world of today, teaching us how to love Christ and His Body.

I became a better father when I found fathers in the Church.

I became a better husband when I learned what it meant to lay down my life for my wife as Christ laid down His for the Church.

Legacy is built in unity and love.

4. Live a Life of Faith

We fast. We cross ourselves. We bow. We confess. We anoint. We receive.

Aristotle understood this long before the Church articulated it fully: the body tutors the soul. We become what we repeatedly do. Virtue is a habit worn into the flesh.

Do the disciplines long enough, and your appetites begin to learn the music of the Kingdom. Your hunger changes. Your attention changes. Your loves re-order themselves around what is true and good and beautiful.

This is the physical side of becoming human.

You cannot think your way into a new nature.

You must live your way into it.

5. Bring Your Best

God gives. We offer. He returns more than we gave.

“Thine own of Thine own, we offer unto Thee.”

This is the prayer in the Liturgy, and it is the economy of the entire Kingdom.

This is synergy. People complicate works and faith; God makes it simple.

“Faith without works is dead.” God works, and we work in Him. Plant. Water. Watch Him give the growth. Show up with your full self, not your performed self, and let the Holy Spirit do what only He can do.

The man who brings his best to the altar (his heart, mind, body, money, family) will not leave the same man who walked in.

Why Orthodoxy, Specifically

Because becoming human requires the Human One. And He locates Himself in His Body.

The Orthodox Church has not reinvented that Body every generation. It has remembered it. In prayer, in sacrament, in bishops in apostolic succession, in a common creed, in a visible table.

The Church that canonized the Scriptures still prays them whole. The Church that anointed martyrs still gives what the fathers called the medicine of immortality. The Church that sang “Holy, Holy, Holy” in the catacombs sings it today in the mountains of West Virginia.

This is continuity, a living body.

If you want faith to outlive your worst news cycle and make you fully human over time, you need a people who will carry you when you cannot carry yourself, feed you when you cannot feed yourself, and tell you the truth when you would rather hear something comfortable; like a mother, given by God. Come and see.

What Becoming Human Actually Looks Like

Here is what changes, slowly, like bones healing:

• Less performance, more presence. You stop auditioning for your own life and start abiding in the One who gave it.

• Less argument, more adoration. Your mind stays sharp, but it learns to kneel. Intellect becomes an offering.

• Less isolation, more belonging. You inherit fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, saints. You become someone’s spiritual son and someone else’s father.

• Less frenzy, more thanksgiving. Gratitude becomes the native air. You stop chasing and start receiving.

• Less fantasy, more flesh. Icons, water, oil, bread, wine. God using ordinary things to heal extraordinary wounds.

I used to think salvation was mostly ideas I affirmed. Now I know it is a Life I receive.

The point was never to become a spiritual spreadsheet. (As much as I love a good spreadsheet.) It was, and is, to become a real man, a real father, a real son of God, in Christ, by the Spirit, to the glory of the Father.

This is how you build something that outlives you. A life. A people. A lineage in Christ.

Awake, O Sleeper

This is my last word in this series. And it is also my invitation.

Lay down the costume.

Come to the hospital.

Be baptized into the Kingdom.

Confess your wounds.

Eat the Fire that does not consume.

Honor His Mother.

Keep company with His saints.

Learn to pray with the Church that never had to reinvent Christianity to remember it.

I found this with my wife at my side, our daughters with us, under a priest who keeps saying “Pay attention,” at a table where the Living One feeds the dying and makes them alive.

I brought a small offering. He gave me Himself.

The point of Christianity is to become human.

Come and see how beautiful that is.

Suppressed in the West after Vatican II.

And yet, right now, his image is sitting on the dashboards of cars, trucks, and motorcycles all across the world.

This is truth refusing to die.

His name is St. Christopher. He is my patron saint. And once you hear his story, you’ll understand why he belongs to this moment, not some forgotten medieval world.

The Giant at the Edge of the World

Before he was Christopher, he was Reprobus.

A Canaanite giant. Over seven feet tall. Fearsome face. A warrior so terrifying he was captured by the Romans and conscripted into the Numerus Marmaritarum, one of their most brutal fighting units.

The early iconographic tradition paints him with the head of a dog.

Yes, you read that right. A dog-headed man.

Before you dismiss that, understand something: Pliny the Elder, in his 37-volume Natural History, wrote of dog-headed men, cynocephali, at the very edge of the known world. This is how ancient people described the foreign, the other, the one from beyond the boundary. The one who came from somewhere we don’t fully understand.

This is the man God chose to bear His Son across a flooded river.

Every time a rational modern mind wants to scrub St. Christopher clean of his strangeness, I think of Leviticus 23:22, “Do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner.”

The edge belongs to God. The mysterious belongs to God. Deuteronomy 29:29 agrees, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God.”

St. Christopher was always meant to live at the edge.

The Most Powerful Master

Reprobus had one goal: serve the strongest king alive.

First he served a giant warlord, a king of his own kind. But he saw fear in that king’s eyes, so he left.

He joined the Roman legions under one of the most powerful emperors of the ancient world. But then he saw the emperor flinch.

What made the emperor flinch?

The mention of the devil’s name.

So Reprobus went looking for the devil himself. He found a band of marauders led by a man who called himself the devil. He served him. Until one day he watched his new master swerve around a roadside cross.

A cross? The devil fears a man who was crucified and still lives?

Reprobus walked away and went looking for Christ.

He applied rigorous, almost brutal, logic to his spiritual search. Reprobus would not serve second best. He followed the chain of fear all the way to the top.

That is nepsis, watchfulness, a discipline the Church Fathers praised as one of the highest practices of the Christian life. It is courageous.

Carrying What He Cannot Carry

A Christian hermit found Reprobus and gave him the Gospel. But Reprobus could not pray. Could not fast. The weight of the evil he had done in service to lesser kings was too great. It crushed him when he knelt.

So the hermit gave him a different instruction.

“You are large and strong. Go serve others by carrying them across the dangerous river.”

Not glamorous. Not theological debate. Simple service. Show up, put your body between the weak and the danger, and get them to the other side.

He did it. Day after day.

Then a small child asked to cross.

Reprobus lifted the child onto his shoulders and stepped into the water. The river swelled. The child grew heavier with every step. Heavier than a grown man. Heavier than an army. Heavier than the world. The water rose above Reprobus’ head, again and again.

He nearly drowned.

But he made it to the other side. Gasping he spoke to the small child and said, “You felt as heavy as the whole world!”

The child answered, “You had on your shoulders not only the whole world but Him who made it. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work.”

The name Christopher is Greek. Christóforos. Christ-bearer.

He was baptized in that crossing by full immersion, held under by the weight of the King of Kings.

And he came up on the other side a new man.

This Story Is Older Than You Think

If this story feels familiar in your bones, it should.

It echoes through the whole of Scripture.

Noah crosses the water with wild beasts and the remnant of creation. The Hebrews cross the Red Sea alongside foreigners and wanderers into a wilderness full of giants. Then Joshua, Yeshua in Hebrew, the same name as Jesus, leads God’s people across the Jordan River into the Promised Land.

And who stands beside Joshua?

Caleb.

Caleb, whose name literally means dog. A Kenizzite. A foreigner. The one who received the edge of the land, the margins, as his inheritance.

Joshua and the dog-man cross the water and inherit the Kingdom.

“Am I a dog,” Goliath, the giant man, sneers at David, “that you come at me with sticks?”

“Even the dogs,” the foreign woman tells Jesus, “eat the crumbs that fall off the edge of the table.”

The pattern runs deep.

The foreign. The edge. The dog. The water crossing. The King.

Scripture is showing us the shape of the Church itself. A Kingdom built from foreigners, from the ones the world discards, from the ones who carry Christ through the flood.

What 666 Has to Do With It

St. Christopher is an end-times saint.

Bear with me here, because this goes somewhere concrete.

On the sixth day, God created man. Six is the number of man. Seven is the number of completion, the day God rested. Three in Scripture represents fullness: Holy, Holy, Holy. The Trinity.

So 666 is not simply a spooky number. It is man, triply complete in himself. Man perfected by man. Man reaching for the throne of God without God. That is the spirit of every age that forgets it has a Creator. This age. Modernity explaining away mystery, miracles, and faith; man perfected by man without the need of marginal space.

St. Christopher was suppressed precisely because institutional powers do not love a saint who lives at the edge of their control, who belongs to the foreigner, the traveler, the one not quite inside the borders yet.

Churches placed his image at their exits, not their entrances. Medieval towns put him on bridges. People put him in their cars.

Travel is liminal space. Between here and there. Between who you were and who you’re becoming. Between Egypt and the Promised Land. Between man and God.

In an age that worships the idol of human sufficiency, that wants to account for every margin and scrub away every mystery, St. Christopher stands at the exit and says: the road ahead belongs to God, not you.

The Man We’re All Meant to Be

After the river crossing, Christopher traveled to Lycia.

He comforted persecuted Christians. He converted thousands. When the Roman ruler had him arrested and sent beautiful women to seduce him, he converted them instead.

When they tried to kill him by fire, by arrows, the attempts failed.

Finally, he was beheaded.

The Kontakion of the Church sings it plainly:

The most terrifying warrior freely surrendered.

That is the picture of Christian manhood that has been slowly erased from public life. Replaced by passive, soft, virtue signaling, weak men leading us to ruin.

But St. Christopher points in a different direction, he points to terrifying strength, freely surrendered to Christ.

Paul wrote it in 1 Corinthians 1:27, “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.”

The dog-headed giant, carrying God across the flood.

The foreign woman, eating crumbs from the edge of the table.

This is us. This is the Church militant.

What I’m Actually Saying

When I was given St. Christopher as my patron saint, it was to learn I am Reprobus before I am Christopher.

A man who served lesser kings. A man carrying weight that should have drowned me. A man who needed someone to tell him: serve others and there you will find Christ.

Choosing a patron saint is choosing accountability in love. It is admitting you need a companion who has already run this road, who is part of the great cloud of witnesses, and whose intercession steadies your feet when the water rises.

Compared to Christ, we are all dog-headed foreigners from the edge of His map.

This is the ground of our salvation, humility before the throne.

We were not chosen because we were already clean, already inside the borders, already finished. We were chosen to bear Him through the flood to the other side.

May 9th is the feast of St. Christopher.

On that day, wherever you are, remember that the road ahead is not yours to control, but Christ’s to sanctify.

Bear Christ. Cross the river. Serve others.

That is how you build something that outlives you.

We carry them on our shirts, our phones, our walls. Team logos, celebrity faces, family photos, flags. We lift them high and kiss them in our hearts.

The early Church warns about pagan icons because Christian images are holy. Long before the Church established icons as part of the councils; they had them in their caves, homes, and places of worship.

I have stood before the icons of St. John in San Francisco and in Israel where the saints prayed for centuries, asking for help.

In Rome, in West Virginia, in every temple I have entered, the same grammar holds: Christ in the center, His Mother nearby, the saints gathered. The story of salvation wrapped around the people like light.

Christians keep icons despite the risk of persecution.

And I want to tell you why. More importantly, I want to show you what you are already doing without knowing it.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Your Walls

Here is a question worth sitting with: What faces do you keep before your eyes every day?

Your phone screen. Your social feed. The celebrities, the influencers, the athletes, the politicians. The icons that greet you before you’ve had your first cup of coffee. The images that shape your mood, your desires, your sense of what is worth wanting.

You have icons. Every human being does. The word itself is just the Greek word for image.

We carry them on our shirts, our phones, our walls. We scroll past thousands of them daily. We lift the ones we love and are trained by the ones we don’t even notice.

The question is not whether you have icons. The question is whether the faces you keep before you make you more real or less.

Everyone has icons. Even the Iconoclasts.

The man who would never bow before a holy image will bow before his phone for four hours a day. The woman who calls religious pictures superstition scrolls past a thousand curated faces designed by algorithms to trigger her dopamine and shape her desires. Some people mock “religious pictures” while letting advertisers catechize our hearts with images that train us to love noise, novelty, and self.

This is a diagnosis.

After you understand it, you can’t explain it away.

Why the Church Kept Them in the Caves

The early Christians were not naïve. They lived under Rome. They knew the cost of what they believed. Persecution was not abstract. Arrest, torture, martyrdom were real possibilities.

And yet they kept icons. In their homes. In their catacombs. On the walls of their gathering places. They kept them at enormous personal risk.

Why?

Because if Christ cannot be shown, He has not truly come in the flesh. And if He has not truly come in the flesh, we remain in our sins.

This is theology with consequences. The defense of icons is a defense of the Incarnation. The defense of the Incarnation is the defense of the Gospel itself.

St. John of Damascus, writing in the eighth century, put it plainly: “I do not worship matter. I worship the God of matter, who became matter for my sake.”

The Word became flesh. He did not hide. He was heard. He was seen. Human hands touched Him. If God took a human face, we can show what has been seen. That is the simple reason icons exist, as confession.

What Scripture Actually Says

People sometimes come to me with the concern that icons contradict the commandment against graven images. I understand the worry. But look at what Scripture actually does.

God commanded images of cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant, which was bowed to and venerated. Moses lifted a bronze serpent, and those who bowed to it were healed. The Temple was filled with carvings, embroidery, and representations of heavenly things. The prohibition was never against images. It was against worshipping false gods through images. When people get this wrong they watch the power of the Incarnation shrivel with their faith.

And then comes the hinge of all history: “He is the image of the invisible God.” (Colossians 1:15). The Son of God is Himself the Icon (Image, same word) of the Father. The exact imprint of His nature. (Hebrews 1:3)

When I stand before an icon of Christ, the honor does not stop at paint. It passes to the Prototype. This is what the Seventh Ecumenical Council defined in 787 AD, completing what the previous six councils had been pointing toward: The honor given to the image passes to the Prototype.

Worship belongs to God alone. Veneration is the love you show to His friends and His saving acts. The distinction matters. I am not praying to wood. I am praying before the One who looked at me first.

What Icons Actually Do to a Man

I have spent decades in healthcare finance. I have led organizations, managed crises, turned around struggling systems. I know what it is to carry weight.

I also know what it is to carry that weight into prayer and set it down.

Icons correct the eyes. They put Christ at the center and everything else in order around Him. They preach with color what the Gospel preaches with words.

Christ Pantocrator reminds me that the world is not leaderless. When I face a decision that feels too large for me, I need to see the face of the One who holds all things.

The Theotokos with the Child reminds me that the Incarnation is not a slogan. It is a mother holding God. Doctrine with a heartbeat.

The saints remind me that holiness has a human face and a human story. These were real people. Businessmen, soldiers, mothers, physicians, scholars. They faced what I face. They finished the race. Their faces on my wall are not nostalgia. They are a cloud of witnesses.

When I stand before the icon of the Cross or the Resurrection, I am not trying to imagine. I am standing under the fact.

The Icon Corner: Where Your Home Tells the Truth

Here is what I want for your home. A small corner. It does not need to be elaborate. It needs to be intentional.

Christ. The Theotokos. Your patron saint. A cross. A Gospel book if you have one.

This is the place where your family admits the truth. Where you give thanks and ask for mercy. Where you bless your children and pray the Psalms. Where your wife and your kids see that the head of this house orients himself toward something other than ambition and anxiety.

Read Psalm 50. Read a Gospel passage. Light a candle, because prayer should look like something. Bow, because your body should tell the truth your mouth says.

The world will try to fill your house with other faces. The television will offer you lying news anchors or celebrities whose lives are disasters. The phone will offer you an endless scroll of strangers competing for your attention. Algorithms will work hard to replace Christ at the center of your vision with whatever keeps you clicking.

Choose the faces that will make you brave and kind.

This is a decision about who leads your home and what your home is for.

For My Orthodox Brothers Reading This

I want to turn this back on those of us who are Christian believers.

It is easy to see the secular world’s icons and feel superior. The cultural idols are obvious once you know to look. But the mirror is uncomfortable for Christians too.

Do we actually pray before our icons, or do they become furniture?

Does our prayer corner gather dust while our phone consumes our first and last moments of the day?

Do we ask the Theotokos to cover our families, or do we carry our anxiety through the whole day without ever setting it down?

Icons are for prayer. They are not decoration. They are not Orthodox aesthetic for people who like Byzantine art. They are a tool for orienting the soul toward what is true.

The true spiritual life requires that we guard the heart. The Fathers called this nepsis, watchfulness. You cannot guard what you do not see. You cannot see clearly when your eyes are trained daily on faces designed to distract you.

The icon corner is a daily practice of re-orientation. This is how you train the soul to recognize the Face that has always been turned toward you in love.

What I Have Seen

I have stood in churches where the Church has prayed for centuries without interruption and seen miracles.

I have watched what happens when icons are loved in a home.

The children grow up knowing that their home is oriented toward something.

The prayers deepen because the eyes learn to see.

The husband leads differently when he begins his morning by standing before the King of Kings instead of opening his notifications.

The blind will wrongly call this superstition. This is training.

Look at what your eyes already worship every day. Ask which images make you generous. Ask which faces make you clean-hearted. Ask which pictures steady your love for Christ.

Build the Corner. Then Watch What Happens.

Icons are a mercy because God is kind. He took a face so we would not be left chasing our projections. He gave us His Mother and His friends so we would not be alone. He gave the Church this holy way of seeing so we would learn to become what we behold.

We become what we behold. That is the truth underneath all of this.

You are already beholding something. Your eyes are being trained right now. Every face you keep before you is shaping your desires, your sense of what is worth wanting, what kind of man or woman you are becoming.

Set Christ before your eyes and do not move Him, honor His Mother, and keep company with His saints.

Then watch how your house changes. Watch how your prayers deepen. Watch how your heart learns to recognize the Face that has always been turned toward you in love.

Everyone has icons.

Let yours be holy.

I watch crowds chant the names of candidates and treat them like saviors.

I watch good people dial 911 and trust fire and police to come through the night, break the door, and rescue what matters most.

Then I look around modern churches, and I ask a painful question: Do we honor the Mother of God? Do we ask for her help? Do we call her blessed with anything like the urgency we give to our teams, our parties, our emergencies?

If my house is on fire, I want the firefighters.

If my soul is under assault and the world is burning down, do I ask the one woman who carried God in her body to cover my family and my church? Or do I treat her like a seasonal decoration and then wonder why my love for Christ is thin?

The Mirror Nobody Wants to Look Into

Look at your house. Look at your shelf. Count the jerseys, the yard signs, the bumper stickers. Think about dialing 911 with a racing heart because you trust someone will come and save you.

Now ask: do you call on the Theotokos with that same reflex?

Most of us, if we are honest, do not.

We treat the Mother of God like a Christmas ornament. We bring her out in December, maybe light a candle, then pack her away. And then we wonder why our faith feels thin. Why our worship feels like a motivational seminar. Why our prayer life has the warmth of a spreadsheet.

The problem is misplaced trust.

Why the Title Matters More Than You Think

Theotokos. God-bearer. Mother of God.

That title is not decoration. It is a theological fortress.

In 431 AD, the Council of Ephesus affirmed it against a man named Nestorius who wanted to call her only “Christ-bearer,” separating the divine and human natures of Jesus into two persons. The Church did not budge. Why? Because the title guards everything downstream.

If she is not the Mother of God, then the One she bore is something less than God. If He did not truly take our flesh from her flesh, then He did not truly become one of us. And if He did not truly become one of us, your salvation is a legal fiction, not a rescue.

Lose the Theotokos, and you will eventually lose Christ. Not His name. His reality.

St. Cyril of Alexandria, who championed the title at Ephesus, said it plainly: she is “the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh.” Strip that away and you strip the Incarnation. You turn God into an abstraction. You turn salvation into a philosophy lecture.

The Church has always known that healthy Christology and honor for Mary stand or fall together.

What Scripture Actually Says

People sometimes act as if honoring Mary is a late medieval invention. The New Testament does not agree.

Elizabeth said it under the power of the Holy Spirit: “Who am I that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:43). She did not say “the mother of a great prophet.” She said the Mother of my Lord.

Mary herself said: “All generations shall call me blessed.” (Luke 1:48). That is a prophecy. Every generation of Christians is called to fulfill it. Are you fulfilling it?

The angel Gabriel came to her with words the Church has never stopped singing: “Hail, full of grace.” Full. Not partially. Not mostly. Full.

Luke chooses his words with care. The cloud that overshadowed her at the Annunciation is the same word used for the glory cloud that rested on the Ark of the Covenant. She is the Ark. She travels to Judea and the child in Elizabeth leaps, just as David danced before the Ark when it came to Jerusalem.

At Cana, she intercedes. She does not demand. She simply says: “They have no wine.” And then, pointing away from herself and toward her Son: “Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:3-5)

She never keeps the attention on herself. She carries her children to Him who can help. Why? Because this is what mothers do.

The Danger of Keeping Her Small

Here is what I have watched happen in churches that push Mary to the margins.

First, worship gets disembodied. No candles, no icons, no physical anchor. It floats off into ideas and feelings. Eventually, the Sunday gathering looks like a TED Talk with a worship band.

Then Christology thins. Jesus becomes a life coach, a spiritual advisor, a symbol of love. His flesh, His Blood, His Body become metaphors. The altar becomes a stage.

Then the family goes soft. When the model of a woman who said “let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) is removed from the center of Christian imagination, the pattern of sacrificial, obedient, fierce love disappears from our homes. And we wonder why we are raising confused children.

The Fathers of the Church understood this. St. Ephrem the Syrian wrote in the fourth century that she is “the heavenly ladder by which God came down.” St. John of Damascus called her “the exceeding glory of the human race.” St. Gregory Palamas said she surpasses all created beings, cherubim and seraphim included, in holiness and nearness to God.

These were not sentimentalists. These were men who fasted, prayed through the night, fought heresies, and died well. They honored her because they understood what honoring her protected.

Not Worship

Let me be plain, because this is where some brothers stumble, when they don’t understand true worship.

We do not worship the Theotokos. We honor her. The distinction matters, and the Orthodox have never confused it.

Worship belongs to God alone: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What we give Mary is veneration, the honor we give to the highest of all created beings, the one creature who most fully said yes to God, the one woman whose obedience reversed the damage done by Eve’s disobedience.

We ask her prayers the same way we ask a trusted friend to pray for us. Except she is not just a trusted friend. She is the one who loved Christ more purely than any other human being has ever loved anyone. She is alive in God. She is present at the Throne.

“More honorable than the cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim,” the faithful have always sung. It is the measured theology of the Church at prayer.

She Has Covered Men in Battle

This is not theory. The historical record is long and specific.

In 626 AD, Constantinople was surrounded by the Avars and the Persians simultaneously. The Patriarch carried an icon of the Theotokos along the walls. The city held when it had no human business holding.

In 718 AD, a second great siege. The city stood. The people credited her intercession.

Sailors carried her icon. Soldiers prayed to her before battle. Monasteries were built in her name in the most exposed, dangerous corners of the known world, precisely because she was believed to protect those places.

For two thousand years, Christians under pressure, under persecution, under assault, have reached for her name. Theotokos, cover us. And the record shows she has.

A Word to Fathers

Modern people will look at Eastern Orthodoxy and accuse it of being a “patriarchal” faith, toxic masculinity wrapped in incense and gold.

We laugh.

The highest created being in our theology is a mother.

Not a general. Not a philosopher king. Not a powerful CEO. A mother who said yes in a small town in Galilee and changed the direction of the entire cosmos.

If you want to lead your home well, study her. Study her courage. She raised the Son of God. She stood at the foot of the cross when almost everyone else ran. She was present in the Upper Room at Pentecost. She is the pattern of faithful endurance, of chastity, and of humility.

Put her in her rightful place in your household. Teach your children her name and what it means. Hang her icon where your family gathers. When trouble comes, and it will, call on her the way you call 911 when smoke fills the hallway.

She cannot save your soul. Only Christ saves.

But she can carry you to Him. She has been doing it for two thousand years.

And she will, because that is what mothers do.

The Challenge

This week, before you check the standings, before you look at the news, before you head off to work:

When you pray to Christ, also call her name.

Say it slowly. Theotokos. God-bearer. Ask her to cover your family, your home, and your faith. Ask her to teach you how to love her Son with a fully human heart.

Put her in her rightful place.

Watch your faith thicken.

Watch your worship steady.

Watch your home strengthen.

This is how you build something that outlives you.

In the darkness of a long December night, I read his story: His name is Nicholas of Myra and Bari. He was a bishop in the fourth century. He stood in a room full of theological cowards and refused to back down when the crowd wanted a tame, manageable version of Christ. He snuck dowry money through a window at night so young women wouldn’t be sold into shame. He guarded sailors, prisoners, and children. He gave until there was nothing left to give but himself.

Santa Claus is a cheap imitation. St. Nicholas is the real thing.

What the World Did With a Holy Man

Here is what the modern world does with anyone who actually lived for something greater than themselves. It takes their memory, strips out the sacrifice, smooths off the rough edges, slaps a trademark on it, and sells it back to you as entertainment.

Nicholas the bishop becomes Santa the brand. The man who defended the Nicene faith and gave away everything he owned becomes a jolly mascot for consumption. The confessor who suffered for Christ gets replaced with a permission slip to spend money you don’t have on things your kids will forget by February.

This is the pattern of the world.

Every true thing the culture of the world absorbs, it eventually tries to hollow out.

But here is what I have learned: you cannot fully kill a saint. Not the real ones. They keep pointing past the hollow version back to what is actually true.

The Saint the World Can’t Quite Bury

I met St. Nicholas, I studied his story, and I saw salvation wasn’t just a prayer prayed, but a life lived in holiness. Years before I walked into an Orthodox church. Years before I read the Church Fathers. He kept showing up in the margins of my life. An old bishop with a generous hand. A protector of the vulnerable. A man who loved Christ more than his own comfort.

He wasn’t a background character in someone else’s story.

St. Nicholas was one of the men God used to call me home.

Hebrews 12:1 calls them a great cloud of witnesses. This is beautiful theology. The saints are not dead. They are alive in Christ, and they are active in the life of the Church. Revelation 5:8 shows them offering the prayers of the faithful with incense (the prayers of the faithful) before the throne of God. The Saints (literally, Holy People) are living members of the Body.

This is the Gospel taken seriously all the way to its conclusion. “Behold I make all things new.” Christ turns sinners into saints!

The Moment the Door Had His Name on It

I will never forget the day I finally searched for the nearest Orthodox parish. I had been circling the faith. Reading. Praying. Watching from the outside. I had walked through the Fathers, the councils, the theology. I was running out of reasons to stay on the perimeter. A friend told me to contact the priest in Beckley, WV.

I typed in the search. Up came St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Beckley, West Virginia.

I laughed out loud.

Of course it was him. After all those years of him appearing in the margins, the first door God put directly in my path had his name on it. My wife and I walked in. We heard the Psalms. We smelled the incense. We saw the icons. We watched people come forward to the Cup as beggars who had finally found bread.

She looked at me and said, “This is home.“ And I agreed.

I am a healthcare CFO. I have spent decades turning around organizations, building teams, and doing the hard math on what sustainable systems actually require. I know what solid structure looks like. I know when something is built to last and when it is built to sell.

The Orthodox Church is built to last. The saints show us why.

What the Saints Actually Do for You

People hear “honoring the saints” and think idolatry. I understand that. I thought the same thing. But listen carefully.

Worship belongs to God alone. That is not negotiable, and the Orthodox Church has never taught otherwise. Full stop.

Honor belongs to those who have become His friends and images by grace. When I venerate an icon of St. Nicholas, I am not worshiping wood and paint. I am confessing the Incarnation. This action shows that Christianity isn’t just praying a prayer, but living a life of holiness. God took a real human face. He redeemed real human bodies. We can depict what He has made holy.

The honor given to the image passes to the person. The love I show to God’s friends lands in God. This is gratitude.

Here is what the saints protect me from that I did not expect: private fantasies about holiness.

Before the saints became real to me, holiness was an abstract aspiration. Nice in theory. Impossible to locate in actual human life. The saints destroyed that excuse. They give holiness a face, a smell, a posture, and a way of dying. They pray the Psalms until their bones sing Scripture. They forgive enemies who tried to destroy them. They give away food, money, and reputation until only love is left to lose.

You want to know if the Gospel actually works? Stop asking the theory and look at the lives.

The Old Bishop Still Works When the Nights Are Longest

Here is what strikes me every December when the plastic Santa gets dragged out again.

Behind the grinning mascot, there is a real man who loved the poor with his own money. There is a real bishop who stood for the true Christ when it would have been easier and safer to compromise. There is a real pastor who is still, according to the faith I hold, alive in Christ and praying for the world he served.

The darkness has not overcome the Light, writes St. John.

Don’t put that on your bumper sticker, live it.

It is the testimony of every saint who ever lived and died in Christ.

St. Nicholas spent his life pointing beyond himself. To a light that rises in the east on a cold, dark December night. To Christmas. To the Child. To the evergreen that keeps its color when the world goes gray. To a Liturgy that has been praying the same prayers for 1,600 years!

The world dressed him up in a red suit and put him to work selling things. But the man himself keeps pointing home. He pointed me home. He is still pointing.

A Simple Challenge Before You Leave

If honoring the saints still feels strange, do not start with theology. Start with a life.

Pick one saint. Read slowly. Ask God to introduce you. Then ask for their prayers the way you would ask a faithful friend to pray for your family.

You will find that heaven is not as far as the culture wants you to believe, and that the Church is a family that reaches across death without strain.

The saints are our older brothers and sisters.
They have already walked what we are walking.
They can help.
They do help.

Ask St. Nicholas. Watch what happens.

My stomach turned.

That was the moment I stopped pretending.

I had sat in Protestant services for years. Good people. Sincere people. People who loved Jesus and meant every word they sang. I was one of them. I preached, served, gave, and played bass in a praise band. But that afternoon, watching the grocery store bread hit the ground without a second thought, something broke in me I couldn’t fix.

It wasn’t anger at the pastor. It was grief. Deep, clarifying grief.

I had been hungry the whole time and never knew it. (My wife knew it.)

What Paul Actually Said

Most people treat 1 Corinthians 11 like a devotional thought. A reminder to be grateful before the juice and crackers.

That is not what Paul wrote!

“The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a communion in the Blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a communion in the Body of Christ?”

He didn’t say symbol. He didn’t say memorial. He said communion. Participation. Real contact.

Then he warned that eating and drinking “without discerning the body” brings judgment, and that some among them were weak, sick, and had even died because of it. That is not the language of a friendly remembrance snack. That is the language of a holy fire. You don’t get sick from touching a metaphor. You don’t die from a symbol.

Paul was describing an encounter with something real.

The Fathers Knew It

I had spent years reading Scripture. Then I started reading the men who knew the Apostles, who received the faith before anyone had invented denominations or theological systems to protect.

St. Ignatius of Antioch, bishop and martyr, who learned from the Apostle John himself, called the Eucharist the medicine of immortality. Not a reminder of immortality. The medicine itself.

St. Justin Martyr, writing to a Roman emperor in the second century to explain what Christians actually do, said the bread and wine are “not common food,” but the flesh and blood of the incarnate Jesus by His own word.

These men were not writing poetry. They were describing reality as they received it from those who received it from Christ Himself.

The Church guarded this with a seriousness that looked extreme from the outside. The catechumens, those still learning the faith, were dismissed before the Eucharistic prayer began. The deacon cried out “The holy things are for the holy,” and the people answered, trembling, “One is Holy, One is Lord, Jesus Christ.” The crumbs were guarded. The chalice was guarded. Communicants prepared through fasting, confession, and reconciliation.

Because love prepares for love.

The Fact I Can’t Shake

Here is where I want to be fair, because I mean this.

If the Eucharist is a symbol, then a Kroger loaf and laughter make sense. You are doing exactly what you think you are doing. You are remembering Jesus. You are encouraging one another. You are using bread and grape juice to stir up faith. There is no inconsistency there. The casual treatment fits the casual theology.

But if the Eucharist is what the Apostles, the martyrs, and the Fathers said it is, then anything less than reverence is madness.

I could not keep living in the middle. Either Paul meant what he wrote, or he didn’t. Either Ignatius, Justin, Cyril, Chrysostom, and the whole ancient Church got it right, or two thousand years of bloodshed to guard a table was the greatest collective delusion in human history.

I chose to believe the witnesses.

What Is Actually at Stake

People die.

Your grandmother will die. Your children will one day face a hospital room and a narrowing door. You will die.

The early Church had a word for the Eucharist given to those near death: viaticum. Food for the journey. Union with Christ carried into the valley of the shadow.

Confessors had the Eucharist smuggled to them in prison.

Christians hid in catacombs to gather around a table.

They were not risking execution for a metaphor.

They were not dying for a fond memory.

They were dying to receive what Christ promised to give, Himself, real presence, the medicine that death cannot cancel.

“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.”

This is a diagnosis. I can believe every right doctrine, serve every need around me, preach every Sunday, and still starve if I refuse the way Christ chose to give Himself to His people.

The disciples on the road to Emmaus had the Scriptures opened to them. Their hearts burned. But they did not know Him until the breaking of the bread.

The Day I Came Home

When my family and I stepped into the Orthodox Church, confessed our sins, were baptized into Christ, and walked forward to the chalice with fear and love, something happened that I had no category for.

I gave what I could. Bread and wine. Repentance and a broken heart.

He gave back what I could never earn or manufacture. Forgiveness you can taste. Fire that does not consume the penitent. Life that does not stop at the grave.

He gave Himself.

And the strange thing, the thing I did not expect, was that receiving this made me love my Protestant brothers and sisters more. Not less. More. Because I wanted them fed. I wanted them to stop settling for hunger dressed up as sincerity. I wanted them to find the cup that is not pretend.

The Painful Challenge

I am not writing this to score points. I have no interest in winning arguments at the expense of people I love. My family and friends who read this, I love you all.

But I am writing because the stakes are real, and I spent too many years at a table that could not feed me.

If this stings, I understand. It stung me.

If you are a man who leads a family, who wants to pass something real to your children, who wants to build a legacy that outlives you, I am asking a hard question:

What are you giving them at the table?

Are you giving them a tradition of man, or are you giving them Christ Himself?

Come and See

Stand in an Orthodox Liturgy. Hear “Holy, Holy, Holy” rise from the people. Watch the priest call down the Holy Spirit over the gifts. Watch men, women, and children come forward as beggars, hands crossed on their chests, trembling and grateful.

Ask whether this looks like the Book of Acts and the Fathers, or like a modern production.

Ask whether two thousand years of martyrs, saints, and ordinary faithful people were all confused, or whether you might be standing at a distance from something worth drawing near to.

The table is set. The Lamb is the feast. Come hungry. Leave alive.
